Historical Description

STRENSALL is a civil parish and pleasant village, on the east bank of the river Foss, over which there is a bridge of one arch, and east of Galtres forest, with a station a quarter of a mile from the village, on the York and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, and is 6 miles north-east from York, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower with spire, containing a clock and 3 bells: the church was rebuilt in the years 1865—66, the cost of the chancel being defrayed by the late Leonard Thompson esq. of Sheriff Hutton Park, who also erected the stained east window: there is a memorial window, erected in 1890 to the son of the Rev. John Hodgkinson, late vicar; the clock was presented by Lady Mary Thompson, at a cost of £55: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £310, including 96 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1901 by the Rev, William Maltby Osborne, of St. Bees. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1895 at a cost of £900, is an edifice of brick with stone dressings, and will seat 130. There is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. St. Mary’s Hall, the property of the lord of the manor, is used for religious and temperance meetings &c. The York Golf club have an 18 hole course, and a club house. The charities amount to upwards of £50 yearly. There is a tannery in the village, belonging to Messrs. Hirst and Sons, and giving employment to a number of people. The military training camp here for the Northern District comprises 1,284 acres, and extends into Huntington parish: the camp, as well as the whole of the village, is supplied with water direct from the reservoirs of the York Waterworks Company. At the Camp is a soldiers’ Institute. A Post, Money Order and Telegraph Office is open in the camp for the convenience of the officers and men from May to September. The land in the parish is held by various copyholders of the prebendal manor of Strensall, which extends into several other parishes, and is now held by Thomas Richardson esq. of Burn Hall, Easingwold; Mr. H. L. Swift, of Blake street, York, is the manor Steward. The soil is sand and foxmole; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are corn and potatoes. The area is 2,889 acres of land, of which 1,000 form an open moor, and 20 of water; rateable value, £8,376; the population in 1911 was 710 in the civil and 1,282 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary school (mixed), removed & rebuilt in 1857 & enlarged in 1903, for 120 children; average attendance, 120.
