Historical Description

SUTTON-ON-THE-FOREST is a village and township in the now inclosed forest of Galtres, and with the township of Huby and the hamlet of suet Carr form the parish; the village is 4 ½ miles east from Tollerton station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 8 north from York and 5 south-east from Easingwold, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer West, Easingwold union and county court district, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of All Hallows is an ancient edifice of stone, in mixed styles from Early English to Late Perpendicular, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, vestry and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 3 bells: the whole of the church, with the exception of the tower and south wall of the nave, was rebuilt and reseated in 1877, at a cost of £2,573; an organ was erected in 1891 at a cost of £250: there is a fine east window and the chancel and nave contain numerous interesting monuments to members of the Harland family, who were connected with the parish for two centuries, dating from 1689 to 1863: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income about £300, with residence and 38 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Hubert Bernard Drew M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1864, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1861. The Cemetery, near the entrance to the village, occupies a site given by the late Admiral the Hon. A. Duncombe M.P. (d. 1889) for that purpose; it is one acre in extent, with a small mortuary chapel, and was consecrated in the year 1866. There are charities of about £36 yearly value. The celebrated Laurence Sterne, the author of the “Sentimental Journey,” and other humorous works, was vicar of this parish in the year 1738 and subsequently of Coxwold (which see). Sutton Hall, the residence of Mrs. Arthur Grey, is a mansion of brick with attached gardens and lawns. Mrs. Arthur Grey and the trustees of the late Thomas S. Whitaker esq. of Everthorpe Hall, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and potatoes. The acreage is 5,990 of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £4,874; the population in 1911 was 509 in the township and 963 in the parish.
