The church of St. Mary is a very fine building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and lofty massive square embattled tower with four pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells, the first and second dated 1656, and the third 1732: the chancel and nave were erected in the reign of Edward III. but the tower was not built before the time of Henry VIII.: there are monuments to Mr. Richard Lowther, son of Sir William Lowther bart. 38 years rector of this parish, dated 2nd August, 1702; a brass, dated 1663, to Henry Robinson, formerly vicar of Leeds and rector of Swillington; and another brass, dated 11th February, 1879, to George Edmund Fox, appointed to this living in December, 1878. The parish registers, dating from 1539, are in good preservation, and until the time of George I. are written in Latin. The living is a rectory, yearly value £410 with residence, in the gift of Sir Charles Hugh Lowther bart. and held by the Rev. Richard Wentworth Fawkes. The Wesleyans have a small chapel at Swillington Common. Charities to the yearly value of £10 are given away in doles on Christmas and Easter days; and in the last century four almshouses were founded by Sir William Lowther. Swillington House, the seat of Sir Charles Hugh Lowther bart. is a fine old mansion about a mile south of the church, pleasantly situated on the north bank of the river Aire, and surrounded by delightful scenery; the demesne is richly wooded, and the grounds are laid out and kept in a style of rare excellence. Leventhorpe Hall, also on the Aire, and once the ancient manor house, is now the seat of J. Towlerton Leather esq. F.S.A. and J.P. for Northumberland; it is a handsome residence in the Italian style, situated in an extensive park, surrounded by rich woodland scenery and contains many valuable paintings and other works of art. In the neighbourhood of Bullerthorpe, in this parish, are remains of an old Roman road. Sir Charles Hugh Lowther bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is mostly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,514 acres; rateable value, £8,456; population in 1871, 890.
