Historical Description
Two miles from Hull, at Swine or Swinhey, there was formerly a convent of Cistertian nuns, founded by Robert de Verlix, in the reign of King Stephen; at the Dissolution the site was granted to Sir John Constable.
Some years ago, in a garden at this place, a few ancient silver and copper coins were found, turned up by the gardener with his spade; one of which is precisely of the same kind as the one figured in the cuts of Roman coins, in Camden’s Britannia, p. 95, No. xviii., and to which he alludes in his notes upon them, page 104, in the following words: "xviii Flavius Constantinus Maximus Avgustvs, the great ornament in Britain, stamped this coin in Constantinople, as we are taught by these characters underneath, Cons with this Gloria Exercitus; that is, the Glory of the Army. "It should be observed, that the figures representing the head of Flavius on one side, and two men in armour, with bows and spears in their hands, standing on each side two banners on the other side, are remarkably legible, considering the very great antiquity of the coin, which is upwards of 1350 years old.
At Swine, there was once a religious house, which, at the time of the Dissolution, contained a prioress, and fourteen or fifteen nuns of the Cistertian order. It was founded by Robert de Verli, in the reign of king Stephen, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The site is thus described by Burton: "As Holderness in general is very flat, this priory was built upon the highest part of the land, given for that purpose, and was properly placed to prevent too many people going to disturb them; for the land is so flat, and the roads so deep, that in winter, it is scarcely possible to get to it. At present there are no remains of the building to be traced, there being only a farm house." The annual revenue of this house was, according to Dugdale, 82l. 3s. 9d. but 134l. 6s. 9d. according to Speed. It was surrendered by Dorothy Knight, the last prioress, who received a pension of 13l. 6s. 8d. per annum: each of the nuns had pensions of from 3l. 6s. 8d. to 2l. per annum. The site, &c. was sold by Henry VIII. in the year 1540, to Sir Robert Gresham, Knt. and soon afterwards, that prince sold to the same person, the rectory of Swine, with all its appurtenances in Swine, Conistyn, and Gaustead, and the tythes in the other parts of the parish, to be held "de rege in capite per servic. milit." The Swine estate, now belongs to Sir Francis Wood; BART.
Skirlaugh, or Skirlaw, which is in the parish of Swine, but has a chapel constructed in a highly ornamented style of Gothic architecture, and said to have been built by Walter Skirlaw, Bishop of Durham, about the end of the fourteenth, or the beginning of the fifteenth century.
SWINE is a parish and township, with a station on the Hull and Hornsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 6 ½ miles north-west from Hedon, 12 south-east from Beverley and 7 north-east from Hull. This parish was formerly very extensive, but in 1867 the chapelries of Bilton and South Skirlaugh, with some townships added, were constituted separate parishes. The parish now comprises the townships of Swine, Burton Constable, Coniston, Ellerby, Thirtleby, in the Holderness division of the Riding, middle division of the wapentake of Holderness. Middle Holderness petty sessional division, Skirlaugh union, Hedon county court district, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, partly in the Transition Norman style with some remains of the Decorated period, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, vestry, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 4 bells: the tower, erected in 1787, occupies the place of the old tower: in the vestry is an ancient iron chest with a massive lid and a curious lock: the east end of the north aisle is enclosed by screen work, erected by Sir George, 2nd Baron D’Arcy, of Aston, who died in 1531, and forms a chapel, in which are several monuments of the 14th century to the Hiltons, Lords of Swine; two of these bear, on stonework raised above the floor, alabaster effigies of knights in armour with their ladies; in the wall of the south aisle are two other much mutilated effigies of a knight and lady of the 14th century, formerly assigned to the Sutton family, but now thought to represent early members of the Hilton family: the chancel, separated from the nave by an oak screen, contains several stalls with grotesquely carved misereres of the Decorated period: the lectern was carved and presented to the church by Miss Bethell, of Rise: the reredos was erected in 1877: there are 600 sittings. The register dates from about 1706. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £177, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late G. T. Woodroofe esq. and held since 1875 by the Rev. William Cobby M.A., L.Th. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. The tithe, amounting to £13, is impropriated. The Wesleyan chapel here, erected in 1894, has 120 sittings. Here was anciently a priory, founded in the reign of Stephen by Robert de Verli, far nuns of the Cistercian order: at its dissolution there were a prioress and fifteen nuns, and revenues estimated at £82 yearly: the original church was 76 feet in length and 21 wide, the choir being 54 feet long and containing 36 stalls: on the south side were cloisters 76 feet square with alleys 9 feet wide and glazed; the chapter house, and dorter over, being on the east, the frater on the south and the hall and other chambers on the west: the vicar and four priests dwelt in a separate timber house, and there were extensive domestic buildings and offices. In the village are the remains of an ancient cross. To the north-west are traces of a Roman encampment; instruments have been found in parts of this parish, and various celts and fragments of spears have been turned up by the plough. In 1826 a Roman urn was found which contained upwards of 1,400 copper coins. In the parish are extensive earthworks, from which a large quantity of celts, spear heads and sword blades, of mixed metal, were recovered in 1809; these were wrapped in coarse linen cloth and inclosed in a case of wood, unfortunately broken up by the plough. The Crown is lord of the manor and owns all the land excepting about 30 acres. The township has much improved since the Crown became the proprietors; nearly all the farmhouses have been rebuilt. The soil is variable-there is light land and some strong clay, also some carr; subsoil, gravel, clay and peat. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans and turnips, and there is some good pasture land. The acreage of Swine township is 2,286; rateable value, £2,685; the population in 1911 was 218 in the township and 825 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1868, for 70 children; average attendance, 46.
There is a charity of £200 invested in 2 ¾ per cent. Consols, left by the late Mrs. Lamb, for the education of six poor children belonging to the parish.
