Historical Description
SWINTON is a township, village and railway station and ecclesiastical parish, formed from the parishes of Wath-upon-Dearne and Mexbrough, 5 miles north-north-east from Rotherham and Masborough, 9 south-west from Doncaster, 10 south-east from Barnsley, 29 from Leeds, 10 from Sheffield, 42 ¾ from York and 177 from London; it is a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, in the north division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Rotherham union and county court district, Wath rural deanery and York archdeaconry and diocese, situated on the river Don. The Dearne and Dove Navigation form a junction at Swinton with the river Don Navigation. The Midland railway passes through and has an intermediate station, from which passengers for Doncaster are conveyed on the south Yorkshire line, which has a junction here with the Midland. The parish is governed by a Local Board of Health of 12 members. The church of St. Margaret consists of an apsidal chancel, nave add square tower with pinnacles, containing 1 bell; it was rebuilt in 1817 at a cost of £6,500, of which £4,500, together with the site, were given by Earl Fitzwilliam: two beautiful Norman arches from the Old building were preserved feud now form the entrance from the churchyard to the parsonage grounds: there are no monuments remaining from the ancient church: the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem were formerly the lords of the minor of this township: and in Miller’s History of Doricaster sand its vicinity, it is mentioned that” Osbert Sylvan gave two carucates of land in this territory at Uswena to the Prior of Nostil, which was confirmed by Pope Alexander III.; Therein also King Henry II. granted free warren. King John, when on his last inarch from York la Boston, slept at Swinton old hall; he added to the endowment of the living, which afterwards was absorbed by Nostel and Roche, and was ultimately alienated when, those institutionas were dissolved by Henry VIII. The churchyard being now full, it is intended immediately to form a Burial Board under the New Act. The registers date from 1800, previous to which period they were kept at Wath-upon-Dearne. The living is a vicarage, yearly value upwards of £300 with residency and including 118 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Right Hon. Earl Fitzwilliam and held by the Rev. John Levett M.A., of St. Catherine's College, Cambridge. There are chapels for Congregationalists, Wesleyans, Wesleyan Methodists, Primitive Methodists and Wesleyan Reformers. The Primitive Methodist Free Church congregation hold their services at the new Board Schools. A gas company was formed in January, 1856, with a capital of £3,500 (increased to £5.000, and a provisional order was obtained by the company in 1872, to increase the capital to £25,500), to supply Swinton, Mexbrough and Kilnhurst; the works are about midway between Swinton and Mexbrough, upon a low level: a gasometer is now in course of erection, which When complete will hold 150,000 feet of gas; it is prepared for telescope, and will then hold 300,000 cubic feet. The south Yorkshire railway has an establishment at Mexbrough, to which the plant is now removed, for the repairing of engines and waggons, which gives employment to many persons in Swinton. The manufacture of earthenware is carried on; the south Yorkshire Glass Bottle Company has very extensive glass works in Swinton for the manufacture of flint, phial and glass bottles of every description. Here are also the large iron works of Hattersley Brothers and Coe who manufacture stoves, grates, fenders, kitchen ranges, and ornamental castings. These are several collieries and quarries in the parish and neighbourhood, an iron foundry and a brickfield, Earl Fitzwilliam. is lord of the manor, and his lordship and Henry Otter esq. J.P. are chief landowners. The soil is sandy, on sandstone the subsoil is stone and mineral. The chief crops are turnips, barley, clover, wheat and oats. The area is 1,700 acres, ci which 930 acres are arable; 521 meadow and pasture, and the remainder are orchards, homesteads, Woodlands and canals; rateable value, £32,953 7s. 2d.; the population in 1861 was 3,190; in 1871, 5,150. The area of the ecclesiastical parish is 1,373a. 3r. 12p.; population, 5,500.

The National schools for boys, girls & infants were built by subscription, at a cost of £1,700, inclusive of land, given by Earl Fitzwilliam, who also gives £16 6s. yearly to the senior, & £5 5s. to the infants’ school; a Sunday school is held in each; George F.
