Historical Description

TANKERSLEY is a township and parish, with a scattered population, 9 miles north from Sheffield, 5 south from Barnsley, 15 south-west from Doncaster, in the Southern division of the Riding, wapentake of Staincross, union of Wortley, Barnsley county court district, Ecclesfield rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The South Yorkshire railway skirts the borders of this parish on the west, and has a station at Westwood and another at Birdwell. The church of St. Peter is an ancient stone building in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, with square tower and 3 bells, the first cast in 1628, the second undated, the third bearing date 1729: the chancel was restored in 1865. The register dates from the year 1598, and is in good condition. The livings a rectory, yearly value £475 with residence, in the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam and held by the Rev. William Mason Fenn M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge: a new rectory was built in 1872, Rev. Henry Atherton Wolstonholme, of St. Bees, senior curate, is in charge of the Pilley Mission Church. There are several extensive collieries and iron and stone pits near the park. The Thorncliffe iron works and collieries are in this township, and extend to the hamlets of Chapeltown and Mortomley, in the adjoining parish of Ecclesfield. Earl Fitzwilliam is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is various; subsoil clay. The area of the township is 2,463 acres; rateable value, £12,654; are the population in 1871, was 1,830; the area of the is 8,079 acres, and the population in 1871 was 2,884.

Schools

National, Tankersley, for boys & girls, erected in 1854 & much enlarged in 1875, with a house for ther master & mistress & supported by the principal ratepayers; Thos. Clarke, master; Miss Betsey Birkett, mistress.

National, Pilley, was built by the Earl of Wharncliife, & is used for divine service on Sunday morning & evening; the parsonage house adjoins it; Miss Mary Moore, mistress.
