Historical Description

THORNABY-ON-TEES is a town and municipal borough on the banks of the river Tees, opposite Stockton-on-Tees, with a station on the Darlington and Middlesbrough section of the North Eastern railway, about 4 miles north-east from Yarm, 4 south-west from Middlesbrough, 18 north-by-east from Northallerton, 22 northeast from Richmond and 239 from London by rail, in the Cleveland division, of the Riding, in the parish of Thornaby, parliamentary borough of Stockton-on-Tees, Langbaurgh wapentake and liberty, union and county court district of Middlesbrough, Thornaby and Yarm petty sessional division, rural deanery of Middlesbrough, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. This town, for some years knows as south Stockton, is connected with Stockton-on-Tees in Durham, by a bridge across the Tees, constructed at a cost of 88,878, from plans by Mr. Harrison Hayter and Mr. Charles Neale, engineers, and opened 20th June, 1887; the bridge consists of three arches, two of 85ft. Span and a central arch of 110ft. the crown of the latter being 18ft. above zero of the tide gauge adopted by the Tees Commissioners; the crowns of the side arches 16ft.: all the visible portions of the piers, abutments and approach walls are of Bramley Fall stone, the masonry of the piers and abutments of dressed ashlar, and that of the retaining wall on the Durham approach of rough ashlar, and the causeway is 60 feet wide. An electric tramway from Norton and Stockton, to Middlesbrough, passes through the principal road.

The town was incorporated 15th Aug. 1892; the borough, conterminous with the parish of Thornaby, is divided into six wards, each returning three councillors; the corporation consists of a mayor, six aldermen and 18 councillors. The corporation own 1—12th share of the water works belonging to the Stockton and Middlesbrough corporations water board.

The church of St. Paul, which has been constituted the parish church of Thornaby, was consecrated in 1858, and is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a tower containing 8 bells, the gift of Sir Thomas Wrightson bart. and Lady Elizabeth his wife: there are memorial windows, erected to the Revs. George Roberts and Richard Bell stone (1879—81), former vicars of the parish: the church affords 783 sittings. The register dates only from the year 1844, previous to which entries were made in the Stainton register, which dates from 1551. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £342, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Robert Hawley Sharpe B.A. of London University, who is also a surrogate. St. Luke’s is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1895 from that of St. Paul. The church, originally a mission chapel, was rebuilt in 1901 and consecrated Jan. 21, 1904 by the Archbishop of York, and is a building of stone, in the Transition Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, a morning chapel and the lower portion of the tower; there are 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1888. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £288, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Ralph John Featherstone L.th, of Durham University.

The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Patrick, was built in 1872. There is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1886, seating 400 persons, a Baptist chapel, built in 1881, with 350 sittings, also Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Presbyterian chapels, and salvation Army barracks. The cemetery, covering about 18 acres, was formed at a cost of £10,000, and contains two mortuary chapels: it is under the control of the Corporation, acting as the Cemetery Committee.

The Town Hall, occupying a fine position at the corner of the Mandale road, was completed in 1892, at a cost of £7,500, from the designs of Mr. James Garry, architect, of West Hartlepool, and comprises a spacious council chamber with ante-rooms and offices for the town clerk and other officials; on the ground floor are offices for the Education Committee of the County Council, the overseers and a Board room. The Market Hall, a large building in Mandale road, belonging to Mr. G. T. Alderson, of Sadbridge, is used for public meetings, auction sales, bazaars &c. and will seat 2,000 people. The Temperance Hall, in George street, was erected in 1868. The old Institute, in George street, built in 1865, was purchased in 1904 by the Corporation for the teaching of day and evening classes. The Public Library and Reading Room, erected about 1890 at the cost of Sir Thomas Wrightson bart. of Neasham Hall, Durham, was enlarged in 1904 by the liberality of A. Carnegie esq. of Skibo Castle, N.B. The Thornaby Fire Brigade consists of a captain and 12 men, and has one steam fire engine, bought in 1901 at a cost of about £500, one manual engine, a hose reel with 1,000 feet of hose, and a fire escape.

There are branches here of the National Provincial Bank of England Limited and the London Joint stock Bank Limited, and a sub-branch of Messrs. Barclay and Company’s Bank Limited. The extensive iron works of William Whitwell and Co. Limited, situated here, consist of 3 blast furnaces, 6 mills and 34 puddling furnaces, producing both pig and merchant iron of high quality. There are also engineering works, iron founders, ship builders, flour mills and saw mills.

The area of the civil parish and borough is 1,927 acres of land, 46 of tidal water and 23 of foreshore; rateable value, 88,986; the population of the municipal wards in 1911 was:-Cleveland, 3,419; Mandale, 2,959; Tees, 1,942; Old Thornaby, 3.900; Victoria, 2,869, and Westbury, 3,514; total, 18,603.

The population of the ecclesiastical parishes in 1911 was:-St. Paul’s (parish church), 11,940; St. Luke's, 6,663.
