Historical Description

THORNER is a pleasant village, township and parish and station on the North Eastern railway, 7 miles northeast from Leeds and 6 ½ south from Wetherby, in the Eastern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Leeds, lower division of the Skyrack wapentake, Wetherby union, county court district of Tadcaster, rural deanery of Whitkirk, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon and province of York. The church of St. Peter is an old stone building in the Early English style of architecture, restored and enlarged in 1855, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and tower containing a clock and 6 bells, with Westminster quarter chimes (hung in 1864): the chancel is inlaid with encaustic tiles and fitted with choir stalls, the organ being on the north side, and has a stained east window of elaborate design i in the south aisle, and separated from the chancel by a screen, are the following memorials: a stained window, to Richard Newlove M.A. 36 years vicar of Thorner, rural dean and honorary canon of Ripon (1805—74); a tablet to William Seatchard esq. Surgeon, of Thorner (1854); another with a Latin inscription to Joannes Savill esq. (1677), and a third to” John Philip Gemas, born at Carlton, in the parish of Stokfley, Cleveland, in the year 1605; ha died in this town and was buried in this chancel, 1722, in the 118th year of his age; as to attain with health to this age should not be lost to posterity, George, Lord Bingley, and Harriot, Lady Bingley, give this stone to his memory”: there is also in this aisle a stained window to Betty, the wife of John Smithe of Thorner (1877), and three others respectively to John Batty (1868), erected by his widow, Agnes Batty; William Taylor (1857), and Sarah Taylor his wife (1873), and to John A. Ikin (1860): the west window, of three lights, was inserted in memory of Charlotte Eliza Thompson (1856): in the north aisle is a stained window erected by the friends of Henry Skelton of Thorner (1875): the font in coeval with the restoration of the church: the bells are all dated 1874. The register dates from the year 1650, and is in fairly good condition. The living is a vicarage, worth £400 yearly with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Mexborough, and held by the Rev. James Wilson Muscroft M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge; the Rev. John William Oates M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, is at present curate in charge. Thorner New Wesleyan chapel (Leeds, Brunswick circuit) is a beautiful structure of stone, in the Decorated Gothic style, erected in Carr lane by the Wesleyans of Thorner and Scarcroft, at a cost of £6,200 (including the site of one acre of ground), from the designs of Mr. G. F. Danby, of Leeds, in 1877 and 1878; the buildings comprise the chapel, a large school room, three class rooms, minister’s vestry and chapel keeper’s house: the front of the chapel consists of a large central gable, with ornamental entrance, and two windows on either side for the inner lobbies, with handsome four light traceried windows over the entrance, and two others on either side; on the left hand, rising to a height of 100 feet, is a neat tower and spire containing a stair-case to the gallery; on the right, another staircase is arranged as a wing to the central gable, with octagonal end: the sides of the chapel are divided by buttresses into five bays, each lighted by two windows: the whole of the windows are filled with tinted glass and have coloured margins; the inside wood work is of pitch pine, polished and varnished, and fitted up with cushions, carpets, book boxes and umbrella stands, and will seat 450 persons; there is a gallery at the end supported by decorated columns: the roof is of the hammer beam construction, open timbered and boarded diagonally; the acoustic properties of the building are perfect: the chapel contains a very fine organ, and there is a memorial tablet to the memory of the Rev. John Pawson, who was born in this village, and buried here March 23rd, 1806, aged 68, having been 44 years an itinerant minister. The poor’s estate of 9 acres produces £30 yearly. The Earl of Mexborough is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, limestone and ironstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The population of the township in 1871 was 837; the area is 2,316 acres; rateable value £5,846; area of the parish, which includes Scarcroft and Shadwell, 4,888 acres; the population of entire parish in 1871 was 1,627.
