Historical Description
THORNHILL, a village of high antiquity, situated on high ground overlooking the Calder, is an extensive parish, partly in the parliamentary borough of Dewsbury, on the south bank of the river Calder, and comprises the townships of Thornhill, Upper, Nether and Middle Shitlington, Midgley, Flockton and Whitley, 6 miles west from Wakefield and 2 south from Dewsbury, in the Southern division of the Riding, lower division of Agbrige; wapentake, Dewsbury and Wakefield union and county court district, rural deanery of Dewsbury, archdeaconry of Craven, and diocese of Ripon. The portion of the parish not included in Dewsbury parliamentary borough is governed by a Local Board of twelve members. The church of St. Michael consists of chancel, nave and tower, of which the chancel and tower are in the Gothic style of the fifteenth century, while the nave, erected in 1777 in the heavy Italian fashion then prevailing, has recently been rebuilt from designs by G. E. Street esq. R.A.: the chancel of this church has been the burial place of the family of Savile, and contains some fine monuments, the recumbent figures on one of these being of oak: the arms of the Marquis of Halifax, a member of this family, which appeared in the east window, are preserved in the church, and there is other stained glass of an older and more valuable character, specially alluded to by Whittaker in his “History of the Vale of Calder:” the most ancient remaining monument in this church consists of the figure of a knight in armour, undated, and of which there is no record: the oldest of the Savile monuments is of alabaster, with two recumbent figures of Sir Thomas Savile and his lady (1449); a second is of oak, with three recumbent figures of Sir John Savile, grandson of the above, and his two wives (1504), and there are two others, one with a recumbent figure of Sir George Savile (1622), and another to Sir George Savile, his wife and two sons: there are several other memorials of less importance. The register dates from the year 1580, and is in fair condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £1,200, in the gift of Capt. H. Savile; the Rev. Joshua Ingham Brooke M.A. of University College, Oxford, is the rector. Offices for the Local Board, built of stone in a Gothic style, and prettily situated on the Dewsbury road at its junction with Lister Hill, were erected in 1879, at a cost of £3,500; over the arched doorway, forming the principal entrance, are the arms of Thornhill; the whole building is surrounded with stone fence walls surmounted by ornamental iron palisading; Messrs. Kirk and sons, of Huddersfield and Dewsbury, were the architects. There is also a Mission chapel and clergyman’s house at Thornhill Edge. The Baptists, Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, Reformed Wesleyans, and Christian Brethren have chapels here. The money arising from charitable bequests, and distributed in the parish by the churchwardens annually, amounts to about £150. There are important collieries in the place, of which Edward Theodore Ingham esq. is the proprietor; Combs Colliery is near the village. Sir George Savile, who represented Yorkshire in Parliament till his death in 1785, was the chief promoter of the Calder and Hebble Navigation, the canal passing for several miles through the Savile property, and joining the Aire and Calder Navigation at Castleford, thus communicating with the eastern coast, and with the Manchester and Liverpool Canal on the west. The greater part of the township is the property of Capt. Henry Savile of Rufford Abbey, Notts, the present representative of a family who, from the earliest period of Yorkshire history, have been the principal landowners in the valley of the Calder, and until the period of the Civil war resided at Thornhill, during the vicissitudes of which, the mansion was besieged and destroyed, and the owners have since lived at Rufford Abbey, their seat in Notts; in the rectory grounds, surrounded by a moat, are the remains of the mansion. Capt. H. Savile is also lord of the manor. Edward T. Ingham esq. and the rector, the Rev. Joshua Ingham Brooke, are the only considerable landowners. The soil is various; subsoil in low lands clay, on the hills ragg. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The population of the township in 1861 was 3,479; 1871, 5,282; population of Local Board district 6,306; of the entire parish 9,709; and the area is 2,487 acres; entire area of parish, 8,120 acres; rateable value, £30,113 14s. 9d.

THORNHILL LEES is a Village and ecclesiastical Parish formed in 1850 from the parishes of Dewsbury and Thornhill, in Dewsbury union and county court district, rural deanery of Dewsbury, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, and is a station tin the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway and near the river Calder, 1 mile south from Dewsbury. The church of the Holy Innocents, is a building in the Early Decorated style, erected in 1858, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, and tower surmounted by an elegant spire, forming a most picturesque object from the line of railway; the reredos and font are of Caen stone, beautifully carved; the four lights of the chancel, the large east and west windows, and most of the other windows are stained, the seats are of dak; all the sittings are free: the Church together with the parsonage and schools adjoining were built chiefly at the expense of Messrs. Cook, son and Wormald, the proprietors of Dewsbury mills, from designs by Messrs. Mallinson and Healey, architects. The late Joshua Ingham esq. of Blake Hall and the late John Hague esq. of Crow Nest, assisted the founders in the endowment. The register dates from the year 1858. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £158 with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev. Edward Chadwick M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have chapels here. Cullieries and glass bottle works afford the chief employment here. Lees House is the residence of John Walker J.P. esq. one of the partners in Dewsbury mills. The Savile Estate Offices, opposite the railway station, consist of a well-built Gothic structure: William Lipscomb esq. J.P. of Beech Lawn, Heath. near Wakefield, is the agent.
