Historical Description

THORNTON is a township and village in the parish of Bradford, 4 miles west from Bradford, in the Northern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Bradford, wapentake of Morley, honor of Pontefract, North Bierley union, Bradford county court district, rural deanery of Bradford, Craven archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon. The township is governed by a Local Board of Health and is divided into two ecclesiastical parishes, viz. Thornton and Denholme. Thornton St. James was formed in 1867, The church of St. James is a building in the Early Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave and south aisle, with bell-turret and 1 bell, and takes the place of an older edifice erected (as an inscription on its outer wall testifies) by the Freemasons in 1612, and still standing, but unused, in the graveyard, on the south side of the Bradford and Thornton road: the site for the new church was given by John Foster, esq. of Queensbury and Hornby Castle, and the foundation stone was laid by the Right Hon. Earl de Grey and Ripon K.G. on Wednesday, 26th October, 1870: it will seat 700 persons, the former church being available for 570 only. The register dates from the year 1678, and is in very fair condition; the oldest volume, although mutilated, is still legible. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £325 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Bradford and held by the Rev. Richard Henry Heap L.Th. of Bishop Hatfield's Hall, Durham. There is a Congregational chapel, and Day and Sunday schools in connection therewith. A charity of £22 yearly is distributed to the poor who do not receive parochial relief. Here are several worsted mills and collieries. The Mechanics’ Institute, erected in 1871, has since then had Various additions, including a spacious lecture hall capable of seating 500 people, and a gymnasium and bath rooms all furnished complete, given by Joseph Craven esq. Ashfield, Thornton, at a cost of £1,500. A reservoir was constructed at Wicken in the year 1868—69 for the Bradford Corporation. The principal andowners are John Foster esq. Francis sharp Powell esq. Walter spencer stanhope esq. and Major stocks, who is also lord of the manor. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 4,785 acres; rateable value, £24,664; the population in the township in 1871 was 9,142, of which 3,469 are in the ecclesiastical parish of Denholme.

The Grammar school was founded by James Ellis in 1672, & received an additional benefaction from Samuel Sunderland in 1676: it has a yearly income from the endowment of about £100. The new buildings to which the school was removed from school Green in 1878, consist of a neat structure two stories in height, with a master’s house & are arranged for 100 scholars.
