Historical Description

THORNTON-IN-CRAVEN is a parish, village and station on the Leeds and Bradford branch of the Midland railway, 6 miles south-west from Skipton, 6 ¼ north-east from Colne, 218 from London, 23 ¼ from Bradford, 17 ¼ from Bingley, 21 from Settle, in the Northern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Skipton, east division of the Staincliife and Ewcross wapentake, Skipton union and county court district, rural deanery of West Craven, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Mary is a Gothic building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and lower with 4 bells. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a rectory, yearly value £250, with residence and about 60 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held by the Rev. Laurence Stuart Morris M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Ripon and rural dean of West Craven. The United Methodists have a chapel here. In accordance with the will of Joseph Smith Barker esq. of London, there are almshouses for five poor women, founded in 1815 by Mrs. Rachel Smith. who endowed them with £2,000 £3 per cent. Consols. Sir John Pepys Lister Kaye bart. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are J. W. Wasney esq. and William Bracewell esq. Extensive limestone quarries, known as the Thornton limestone works, are carried on by Mr, Robert Bond; the lime afforded by which, from its superior quality, is much in request for foundry purposes and macadamising. The land is chiefly in pasture. The soil is chiefly lime; the subsoil is limestone. The area is 5,434 acres; rateable value, £9,017 14s. 8d.; and the population in 1871 was 2,053.
