Historical Description

THORNTON-IN-LONSDALE is a township and parish partly to Lancashire; 18 miles north-east from Lancaster, 4 north from Bentham station, 11 north-west from Settle, 244 from London, 16 south from Sedbergh and 17 from Hawes, in the Northern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Ewcross and west division of the Staincliffe and Ewcross wapentake, union of Settle, rural deanery of Clapham, archdeaconry of Richmond, diocese of Ripon, situated on the river Greta and on the Ingleton branch of the London and North Western railway. The church of St. Oswald, with the exception of the tower, was rebuilt in 1870, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, low square embattled tower and 3 bells dating from 1635; there are three brasses to Major John Redmayne (1680), Margerite Redmayne (1701) and Ralph Redmayne (1703). The register dates from the year 1576, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £236 with residence and a small quantity of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Worcester and held by the Rev, Henry Sockett Humphreys T.A.K.C.L. The charities are of small yearly value. Thornton Force is a waterfall in the township, and there is a considerable cave named Yordas in the limestone formation. The Earl of Lonsdale is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are George Marton and E. F. D. Foxcroft esqrs. The land is chiefly in pasture. The soil is loamy; subsoil clay. The population of the township in 1871 was 385, and the area in 7,485 acres; rateable values £4,937; the area of the entires parish is 10,181 acres; population 1,184.
