Historical Description

THORNTON-LE-STREET is a township and parish, on the road from Thirsk to Northallerton and on the Codd Beck, 4 miles north from the Thirsk station on the North Eastern railway and 3 from the town, and 6 south from Northallerton, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake of Allertonshire, petty sessional division of Birdforth, Thirsk union and county court district, rural deanery of Thirsk, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Leonard is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry, south porch and a turret over the western gable containing 2 bells: in the chancel there are brass tablets to various members of the Talbot family, formerly of this place, and in 1895 a memorial window was erected to Miss Fanny Selina Crompton: the church was restored in 1855, by the 3rd Earl Cathcart, in memory of Sir Samuel Crompton bart. and affords 110 sittings. The register dates from the year 1598; the earlier portion is very imperfect from damp. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £165, with 20 acres of glebe, and residence, erected in 1891, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Frank Hilton Jackson M.A. of st, Peter’s College, Cambridge. The interest of £20 left by Lady Fagg is given to the poor widows of the parish. There are traces of a Roman road, from which the parish derives its name. Earl Cathcart is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 1,381 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £1,583; the population in 1911 was 126 in the township and 183 in the parish.

The children attend the schools at south Kilvington.
