It is upwards of a century since it was first discovered. It is usually called Boston Spa, and is recommended in rheumatic and scorbutic cases.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

THORP ARCH situated on the north bank of the river Wharfe, over which is a bridge to Boston spa, is a township, parish, village, and station on the Church Fenton and Harrogate railway, 3 miles south-east from Wetherby, 11 from Harrogate, 13 south-west from York, 4 north-west from Tadcaster and 13 north-east from Leeds, in the Eastern division of the Riding, but for parliamentary purposes included in the North Riding; petty sessional division of West Ainsty, upper division of Barkston Ash wapentake, Wetherby union and county court district, Selby rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church of All saints, originally a Saxon work, is now chiefly in the Norman and Early English styles, and consists of chancel and nave with a square tower containing 3 bells: there are monuments to the Hatfield and Gossip families: the east window has been inserted in memory of Colonel and Lady Harriet Lane. The register dates from the year 1595, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £380 with a good residence, in the gift of the Rev. Charles Wheler and held by the Rev. William Henry Jackson M.A.of Brasenose College, Oxford. This manor was assigned by the Conqueror to his follower, Osborne de Arcubus (d’Arcy). The Hail, the residence of Colonel Henry Holden, is a stone building, situated in a small park, about half a mile from the church. The principal landowners are T. G. Hatfeild esq. who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of Lady Elizabeth Hastings. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, turnips and seeds. The parish is noted for the great variety of wild flowers which can be found within its limits. The area is 1,671 acres; rateable value, £3,618; population in 1871 was 368.

Thorpe Arch Grange is a mile from the village; it is the property of the Rev. R. W. Hiley M.A. and occupied by him as a collegiate school.

Endowed school, erected from funds bequeathed by Lady Elizabeth Hastings, in 1836, for the education of 20 children & a residence for the master; Thomas Chadwick, master.
