Historical Description

THORPE BASSETT is a parish and small village near the source of a rivulet, 2 miles south-east from Rillington station on the York and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway and 5 east from Malton, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Buckrose, Malton union and county court district, rural deanery of Settrington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is a small but ancient edifice of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, with vestry, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells: on the north side of the chancel lies the recumbent effigy of an ecclesiastic: the south doorway is a fine example of Norman work: the church was restored in 1879-80, at a cost of £1,750, under the direction of Messrs. Paley and Austin, architects, of Lancaster, when the north aisle was rebuilt on its old foundations, and the arcade, which had for centuries remained built up in the north wall of the nave, was re-opened; a new chancel and vestry were also erected at the same time: in the tracery of the east window are fragments of ancient glass, and the remainder of the window was filled with stained glass in 1894 by the late Lady Cholmley, in memory of her father: the church affords 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1656. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £196, with residence, in the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam D.S.O. and others, and held since 1886 by the Rev. George Alexander Grenside M.A. of University College, Durham, rural dean of Settrington and incumbent of the donative of Wintringham. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. Lieut. George F. Cholmley R.N. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is light and sandy; subsoil various. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The acreage is 2,086; rateable value, £2,062: the population in 1911 was 161.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1804, & enlarged & a class-room added in 1894, for 42 children; average attendance, 15.
