Historical Description

THURGOLAND is a populous township and large but scattered village, situated on a commanding eminence, bounded on the west by the river Don, formerly in the parish of Silkstone, but now a separate ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1844, 3 miles south from Silkstone, 2 north from Wortley railway station, 3 south-east from Penistone, 5 south-west from Barnsley and 10 north-west from Sheffield, in the Southern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Barnsley, upper division of Staincross wapentake, union of Penistone, Barnsley county court district, Silkstone rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon. The church of the Holy Trinity, re-erected in 1871, is a cruciform stone structure in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and transept, with bell turret containing 1 bell; the east window, four windows in the aisle and two in the transept are stained. The register dates from the year 1843. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £145 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Silkstone and held by the Rev. William Upton Wooler M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans and the Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here with a Wesleyan Sunday school; there are also Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels at Crane Moor with Sunday schools attached. There are collieries communicating by branch lines with the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway; and some steel wire works. Thomas Edward Taylor esq. J.P. the Earl of Wharncliffe, and W. T. W. Spencer-Stanhope esq. are chief landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and sandstone. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 2,221 acres; rateable value, £6,201; the population in 1861 was 1,783, and in 1871, 1,982.
