Historical Description

THWING is a civil parish and village, 6 miles south-west from Hunmanby station on the Scarborough and Hull section of the North Eastern railway, 8 ½ west-by-north from Bridlington and 10 north from Driffield, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Dickering, union and county court district of Bridlington, rural deanery of Buckrose, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. This place, in the 14th century, gave the title of baron to the family of de Thweng, anciently lords of Kilton, Yorks. The church of All Saints is an ancient edifice, dating back to the early Norman period: it consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a small embattled western tower, containing a clock and 2 bells: a stained window, erected at the cost of the late Robert Prickett esq. exhibits the arms of the see of York, those of the ancient barons of Thwing, the house of Lumley and the late lord of the manor: there is also a three-light window, erected by Mrs. Deane, of Doncaster, in memory of her husband: in the chancel is a marble tablet to R. Prickett esq. d. 1844, and another on the south wall to Thomas Lamplugh, Bishop of Exeter (1676-88) and Archbishop of York (1688-91), who was born here in 1615, and died 5th May, 1691: there is a monument, with recumbent effigy of a priest holding a chalice, to Thomas, last Baron de Thweng and rector of Lytham, ob. 1374, when the barony fell into abeyance: in the tympanum of the south door is an ancient stone carving: the communion plate was presented by Archbishop Lamplugh: the church was repewed in 1814. by the parishioners, and thoroughly repaired in 1836, at the cost of the late Robert Prickett esq. and in 1901, when the tower was rebuilt and a new porch added, as a memorial to Archbishop Lamplugh, at a total cost of £2,100: a carved oak pulpit, a brass lectern, the gift of Sir Tatton Sykes, and an organ were added in 1910-12: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1691. The living is a rectory, in two united medieties, called Thwing and Octon, net yearly value £550, including 556 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1908 by the Rev. Edmund Sardinsons Carter M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. In the vicinity of Wold Cottage, about 2 miles from Thwing, an extraordinary natural phenomenon occurred on the 13th of December, 1755, when an aerolite, 28 inches in breadth, 36 inches in length and weighing 56 pounds, fell and partly buried itself in the ground: the late Edward Topham esq. of Wold Cottage, erected an obelisk in 1799 on the spot to commemorate the events a portion of the stone is now in the Natural History Department of the South Kensington Museum. James Calder esq. of Scarborough, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light chalky; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 4,025 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £3,950; the population in 1911 was 339.

Council Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1834, for 70 children; average attendance, 68.
