Historical Description

Tickhill is situated four miles west of Bawtry. The market on Friday is almost disused. This town lies in a valley watered by a brook, and being a straggling place, covers a deal of ground. Some of the houses are of brick, others of stone, but only a few are handsomely built. The church and the ancient castle are the most conspicuous objects; the former is a spacious and handsome structure, with a lofty and beautiful tower, apparently built in the reign of Henry III., as the chancel contains an inscription in barbarous and abbreviated Latin, on a brass plate, to the memory of William Eastfield, Seneschal of the Lordship of Holderness and the Honour of Tickhill, who died December 24th, in the year 1386. Of the castle, little remains but the lofty mound on which the keep formerly stood, with the ditch, and part of some walls; but an ancient gateway, forming the entrance to the western side, is the most curious part of the ruins. The northern part of the structure, with modern repairs and additions, is the seat of the Hon. Frederick Lumley. A great part of the ground within the walls is converted into gardens and shrubberies. After the battle of Marston-moor, and the surrender of York to the parliament’s forces, the Earl of Manchester sent Colonel Lilburn to reduce the castle of Tickhill, which surrendered in a few days. It is remarked, that as the royalists here in garrison had plundered all the country round, they were better supplied with provisions than with military stores. A little to the west of the town, in a deep valley, are the ruins of an ancient priory of Augustines, founded by a dean of St. Paul’s. The population of Tickhill, in 1811, was stated at 1508.

About four miles from Tickhill is Sandbeck-Park, the seat of the Earl of Scarborough; near to which are the remains of Roche Abbey, founded for Cistertians in the year 1147. The ruins are hidden by a steep woody cliff toward the south, and by large rocks towards the north and northeast; the north and south sides are bounded by woods. To the east is a large reservoir of water, formed by the collected stream of a rivulet that runs amongst the ruins. The banks on each side this water are steep and clothed with wood, interspersed with fragments of rocks and ruins. One side of the nave of the church, and some unconnected arches, are all that are now left of the original building, except several fragments, which are dispersed for above a mile.

The different offices, outbuildings, farmhouse, and gardens, are well planned, and perfectly calculated for convenience and comfort. As the house stands nearly in the middle of a noble park, vistas have been cut through it to the westward, and at the extremity of one of these, the spire of Laughton church forms a fine terminus.

The stone of which this abbey was built, was dug up out of the famous quarry near adjoining, so well known to masons by the name of "Roche-abbey stone," which for whiteness and beauty is unequalled.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

TICKHILL is a market town, parish and polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, south division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, rural deanery of Doncaster, archdeaconry and diocese of York, on the borders of Nottinghamshire, 7 miles south from Doncaster, west from Bawtry station, 151 from London, 31 from Newark, 15 from Retford, 41 from York, 37 from Leeds, 32 from Wakefield and 65 from Hull. The streets diverge nearly in the form of a cross and extend into the roads from Doncaster to Worksop and from Rotherham to Bawtry. The town is governed by a Local Board of nine members. The ancient parish church of St. Mary consists of chancel with aisles, nave, aisles and a very fine and massive tower with pierced battlements and lofty pinnacles, containing 6 bells; the basement of the tower bears evidence of its having formed part of an earlier erection, but the church, as it now stands, was built by William de Estfield, about the year 1360: the style is Perpendicular throughout, with the exception of one Flamboyant window in the mortuary chapel of the founder: there is an altar-tomb, not apparently in its original position, but supposed to be of the fourteenth century, with a Latin inscription in memory of “William de Estfield, who was seneschal of the lordship of Holderness and of the honor of Tykehill, under Philippa, Queen of England, and of the lordship of Haytfield, under Edmund Duke of York, and Margaret his wife, he died 22 Dec. mccclxxxvi the nave has a fine high clerestory the west window in the tower is a very beautiful specimen of the Perpendicular style, and some fourteenth century glass is still preserved in two windows in the south aisle; the font is ancient. The church, which stands in need of thorough internal restoration, is capable of seating about 800 persons. The register dates from the year 1538, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £375 with residence, increased by the sale of glebe lands since 1877, is in the gift of F. J. S. Foljambe esq. M.P. and held by the Rev. Charles Bury B.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The Congregationalists and Wesleyan Methodists have chapels. Here are the remains of an Augustine priory, founded in the time of Henry III. Tickhill is said to be identical with a village called, in Domesday, “Dadesley which, with many other manors in the neighbourhood, was given by the Conqueror to Roger de Busli; the Castle, part of the old walls of which are still standing, belonged to John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. The Friary, the seat of Frederick John Leather esq. is an ancient Tudor house, in a retired valley, west of the town. In Northgate are some remains of St. Leonard’s Hospital, and near the church is an ancient almshouse, called the Maison de Dieu, for fourteen poor people, eight of whom share in an annual endowment of £60, derived from land, the remaining six being supported by Lord Scarbrough. The poor parishioners have about £12 a year. A fair is held on the second Friday in October for cattle and wares. The market cross was erected in 1776. The Earl of Scarbrough is lord of the manor under the Crown; the principal landowners are the Earl of Scarbrough, E. W. Fox esq. the Duchy of Lancaster, W. Aldam esq. and B. H. Brooksbank esq. J.P. The soil is limestone, clay, sand and peat; subsoil, limestone and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and pasture. The population of the township in 1871 was 1,844, and the area 6,779 acres, of which about 5,400 are in Tickhill township; rateable value, £11,848; entire population of the parish in 1871 was 1,920.
