Historical Description

TINSLEY is a township and an ancient ecclesiastical parish, with a station on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, 3 ½ miles north-east from Sheffield, on the high road from that place to Rotherham and 166 from London, in the Southern division of the Riding, Rotherham union and county court district, south division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, rural deanery of Rotherham and York archdeaconry and diocese. Here the Sheffield canal joins the river Don. Tinsley has, from an early period, constituted a distinct parish, and local history points to the existence here of a Norman church anterior to that of Rotherham. The present church of St. Lawrence, rebuilt in 1877—9 at the expense of Mrs. Overend, of Retford, in memory of her late husband, George Hounsfield esq. of High Hazles, consists of chancel, nave and north aisles: the memorial east window was presented by W. Overend esq. and an organ by J. M. Coupland esq. The register dates from the year 1700, those of earlier date having been lost. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £205, in the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam and held by the Rev. Josiah Fell Buckler B.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. Here are the Tinsley collieries, belonging to Benjamin Huntsman esq.; also several iron, steel and wire works. Earl Fitzwilliam is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and potatoes; much land is in pasture. The area is 1,672 acres; rateable value, £6,886; and the population in 1861 was 697; 1871, 953.

Parish school, chiefly supported by Earl Fitzwilliam & Beniamin Huntsman esq.; Walter Lawton, master.
