Historical Description

TONG is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish formed from the parish of Birstal, 6 miles west-south-west from Leeds, 5 east-by-south from Bradford, 10 from Huddersfield, 10 from Halifax and 3 from the Stanningley station on the Bradford and Leeds railway and 1 ½ from Birkenshaw and Tong station on the Bradford and Wakefield railway, in the Eastern division of the Riding, wapentake of Morley, honor of Pontefract, North Bierley union, Bradford petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Birstal, Craven archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. James, a stone building, consisting of chancel, nave, tower, 6 bells and a clock, is a parochial chapel, paying 2s. per year to the vicar for synodals, and was rebuilt in 1727. The register dates from the year 1550 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, of the yearly value of £740, in the gift of Colonel Thomas Richard P. Tempest and held by the Rev. Charles Farrow. B.A. of Durham. St. John’s church, Tong street, was built in 1860 by subscription at a cost of £1,400 and consists of chancel, nave and transepts. The register dates from the year 1860. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £35 with residence, in the gift of Colonel Thomas Richard P. Tempest and new vacant. There are chapels for Westeyans, Methodist New Connexion and Primitive Methodists. Bewcock’s charity amounting to £11 yearly is distributed amongst the aged poor on St. Thomas’ day. There is a Cemetery of 3 ½ acres. There are several coal pits in the township, worked chiefly by the Bowling Iron Company. Tong Hall, a large Dutch red brick mansion, built in the reign of William III. and surrounded by an extensive and beautiful park, is the seat of Colonel Thomas Richard P. Tempest J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is variable, but clay preponderates; subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, turnips and grass. The area is 2,657 acres; rateable value, £18,500; the population in 1861 was 3,035; in 1871, 4,229.
