Historical Description

TOPCLIFFE is a parish, comprising the townships of Asenby, Dalton, Elmire-with-Crakehill, Marton-le-Moor (part of) and Topcliffe, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, rural deanery of Thirsk, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York.

TOPCLIFFE is a large village on the eastern bank of the river Swale, 2 ¾ miles south from the Topcliffe station on the Thirsk and Ripon section of the North Eastern railway, 12 ¼ south from Northallerton, 4 ½ southwest from Thirsk, 7 north-east from Ripon and 24 ½ north-east from York, in the wapentake and petty sessional division of Birdforth, Thirsk union and county court district. The church of St. Columba, rebuilt in 1855, is an edifice of stone consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with 8 pinnacles and containing 4 bells: fixed in a slab on the wall of the south aisle is a fine Flemish brass to Thomas de Topcliff, 1362 and Mabel, his wife, 1391: both are habited in mantles and there is a canopy and a mutilated marginal inscription. On the occasion of the restoration of the church, c. 1860, this brass, having to be removed, was discovered to be almost entirely composed of a number of previously used fragments of metal of which no rubbing seems to have been made: the Percy chapel contains three monuments to Sir Metcalfe Robinson bart. 1688 and later baronets of this family: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £420, with 6 acres of glebe and house, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York, and held since 1913 by the Rev. Charles Beecroft Pauling. The township of Topcliffe is charged with a tithe of £106 payable to the vicar, and £556 belonging to the Dean and Chapter of York. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1812 and rebuilt in 1840. A fair is held here every year for horses, homed cattle and sheep, on July 37th. Lord Leconfield, who is lord of the manor and Mrs. Hill-Walker, are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly a rich loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 4,178 acres of land and 25 of water; rateable value, £8,400; the population, in 1911 was 542 in the township and 988 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary school (mixed), erected in 1848 & enlarged in 1892 by Lord Leconfield, for 150 children; average attendance, 120.

RAINTON-WITH-NEWBY, formerly a township in this parish, is now united with Baldersby.
