Asenby History
ASENBY, or Azenby, is a village on the south-western acclivities of Swaledale and on the Boroughbridge and Durham road, half a mile south and 6 miles east from Ripon, in the Hallikeld wapentake and petty sessional division, Ripon union and county court district. This township is charged with a tithe of £64 for the vicar, and of £20 for the Dean and Chapter of York. The impropriate tithe amounts to £250. Lord Leconfield, who in lord of the manor, and Dr. Rockliffe own about one-half of the township; the remainder is held by various smaller freeholders. The soil is chiefly of a gravelly nature, rich and productive; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and turnips and some pasture land. The area is 1,169 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £1,701; the population in 1911 was 168.
