Historical Description

UPLEATHAM is a civil parish and pretty village, miles from Marske station on the North Eastern railway and nearly 3 miles north-east from Guisborough terminal station on a branch of the same line, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Langbaurgh East, East division of Langbaurgh liberty, Guisborough union, Stokesley county court district, rural deanery of Middlesbrough, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Andrew, erected in 1835, is a building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western tower, containing one bell: the lower stage of the tower forms a porch: the stained east window is a memorial to Thomas, 2nd Earl of Zetland K.T. d. 6 May, 1873; and another memorial window was placed in 1896 to the Rev. Thomas Harrison Dixon M.A. vicar here 1855—94: the church was restored internally, a vestry built and an organ provided, during the period 1876—88, at the sole expense of the Marquess of Zetland, the cost amounting to £723: there are 134 sittings. The old church stands at a distance of nearly half a mile from the village, and the churchyard is still used as the burial ground for the parishioners: leaning against the wall is the lid of an old stone coffin, with a foliated cross. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £265, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1906 by the Rev. Richard Roberts, of St. Aidan’s. The tithe, amounting to £236, is the property of the Marquess of Zetland. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. Upleatham Hall and several houses are now in ruins owing to the ironstone mining operations, which have caused many residents to remove elsewhere. The Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil about here is clayey; subsoil, clay and stone, and there are ironstone mines in the parish. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans. The area is 1,402 acres; rateable value, £7,450; the population in 1911 was 146 in the civil and 151 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1871, partly at the expense of the late Earl of Zetland, for 75 children; average attendance, 22.
