Historical Description

Upper Thong, which includes the most modern part of Holmfirth. on the western bank of the river Holme, is a township, local board district and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1846, in the parish of Almondbury and grave ship of Holme. The village of Upper Thong is situated on the brow of a lofty hill about one mile west: there are some good houses and shops, besides many private residences on the hill side. The church of St. John, built in 1847, is a handsome Gothic cruciform stone structure, consisting of chancel, nave, transept and square embattled tower containing 1 bell: the church has 6 memorial stained windows. The register dates from the year 1847. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150 with residence, in the gift of the Crown and Bishop of Ripon alternately, and held by the Rev. William Flower M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The charities amount to £37 yearly. S. W. Lane Fox esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are William Harpin esq. Benjamin Butterworth esq. Mrs. Joseph Dyson, F. R. Jones esq. Seth senior and sons, Alfred Turner esq. and Miss Gartside. The soil is gravel and clay; subsoil stone. The land is used about one-third for oats &c. and two-thirds grazing. The population (1871) 2,419, and the area is-of the township 3,117 acres, ecclesiastical parish 3,158 acres; rateable value £7,772.
