Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
WADSLEY, situated on the Don, is a hamlet and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1841 from the parish of Rotherham, in the Southern division of the Riding, Wortley union, Northern division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Sheffield county court district, rural deanery of Ecclesfield, diocese and archdeaconry of York, with a station on the Manchester and Sheffield railway, 2 ¾ miles north-west from Sheffield, 165 from London, 38 ½ from Manchester, 41 ½ from Leeds and 47 from York. The church is a Gothic building, erected in 1834 at the cost of the Misses Harrison, daughters of the late Thomas Harrison esq. of Weston, and has a small spire and 1 bell; a stained east window was inserted in 1859 by subscription, and a tablet erected in 1873 by the late Henry Wilson esq. to the memory of the Misses Harrison. The register dates from the year 1834. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £320, in the gift of the Church Patronage society, and held by the Rev. Melville Holmes B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge; the vicarage house is adjacent to the church. In the churchyard are memorials recording the deaths of many who suffered by the disastrous flood in 1864. A substantial mission room with house has been erected by public subscription opposite the church, at a cost of £400, and at Malin Bridge a similar building erected at a cost, including the purchase of the site, of £350, and used both as a boys’ school and for service on Sunday evening. There are also chapels for Wesleyans, Methodist Free Church and Methodist New Connexion. Six almshouses were erected in 1840, by the late Miss Rawson, for six widows, who each receive 4s. per week. The population are employed in the large rolling mills, steel converting, pocket knives and file manufacturing. The south Yorkshire Lunatic Asylum was erected in 1873, for 800 patients, and includes an administrative department, kitchen offices, laundry buildings and workshops; a church has also been erected on the spacious grounds attached to the asylum, capable of holding 1,500 persons: superintendent, Samuel Mitchell M.D.; chaplain, Rev. H. A. Goodwin. In digging up the foundations of this asylum some stumps of sigillarice or trees of the coal-measures, were uncovered. The Duke of Norfolk is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Henry Payne esq. George Miller esq. and J. W. Dixon esq.
The soil is sandy; subsoil stone and coal. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The population in 1861 was 3,849; 1871, 4,837. The area is 3,270 acres.
Wadsley Bridge, pleasantly situated on an eminence, has some good villa residences. An iron church has been erected hereby public subscription, in connection with Wadsley church, and seating 200; curate in charge, Rev. Edmund Bon fellow M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. Wisewood is half a mile south of Wadsley. Birley Carr, Birley Edge, Deerlands and Hirst are in the postal district of Wadsley Bridge.
Beelet Wood is now in the Oughtibridge postal district, and Wisewood and Malin Bridge are in Owlerton postal district.
Southey, Elm and Longley are now included in the postal district of Wadsley Bridge.
