Historical Description

WALES is a parish and small but pleasant village, 8 miles south from Rotherham, 10 east-by-south from Sheffield and 2 west from Kiveton Park station, in the Southern division of the Riding, Southern division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Worksop union and county court district, rural deanery of Rotherhamy archdeaconry and diocese of York, and is near the Chesterfield canal, which passes the village through a tunnel 2 ¼ miles long. The church of St. John is a small and ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Norman style, consisting of chancel and nave, with a square embattled tower containing 3 bells, dating from the 17th century. The register dates from the year 1580, and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, without residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and held by the Rav. Lucius Henry Deering M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a chapel for Primitive Methodists erected in 1868, and one for United Free Methodists. Sackyille Walter Lane Fox esq. who is lord of the manor, and the Duke of Leeds, are chief landowners. There are extensive coal mines at Waleswood belonging to Messrs. Skinner and Holford. The soil is clay and sand; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and beans. The area, including the small hamlets of Norwood End, Bedgreave and Waleswood, is 1,319 acres; rateable value, £11,439, and the population in 1861, was 305: 1871, 1,359.
