Historical Description

WALKINGTON is a township, parish and considerable village, on the road from Beverley to Howden, 2 ½ miles south-west from Beverley and 2 ½ north-east from Little Weighton station on the Hull, Barnsley and West Riding junction railway, in the Holderness division of the Riding, wapentakes of Harthill and Howdenshire, North Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Beverley, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Hallows, partly rebuilt in 1818, is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts and a western tower with small pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the stained east window was inserted by Major J. D. Ferguson-Fawsitt, to Annie Eliza his wife, who reseated the church in 1886, at a cost of £200; a brass lectern was also presented in 1888, at a cost of £105, by Major Ferguson-Fawsitt: the church was partially restored in 1898, at a cost of £550, when the flooring was renewed and heating apparatus laid down: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1752. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £670, including 537 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Arthur Stanley Wilson esq. M.P., J.P. of Raywell Hall, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Michael Watson Bodley Dawe M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford. The rectory house, much improved by the present rector, adjoins the churchyard, from which it is approached by a fine avenue of trees. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1887, in place of one built in 1822, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1879. William Sherwood, in 1537, devised certain rent-charges, cottages and 45 acres of land in Walkington, for the use of the poor and the repairs of the road from Walkington to Beverley: the rents now amount to about £92 yearly. The school land yields an annual income of about £4. About a quarter of a mile north-east from the village, on the road to Beverley, are the remains of one of the ancient crosses which marked the limits of the sanctuary of Beverley; it stands on the footway, and consists of about 30 inches of the shaft inserted in a large stone. There is another of these crosses inside the hedge on the road from Beverley to Bentley, and one on the road to Bishop Burton. The greater part of the land belongs to the Bishop of Durham’s manorial liberty of Howdenshire, and is called “the manor of Howden Fee,” and the rest of the parish is in the manor of “Provost’s Fee,” of which the trustees of the late Mrs. Barnard (d. 1910) are lords, except a very small portion, which lies in the manor of Beverley chapter. The township is usually returned as two united constable wicks, manors, townships or fees, called “Howden Fee” and “Provost’s Fee;” the latter having been anciently the fee of the Provost of Beverley. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late Mrs. Barnard, the trustees of Ernest Richard Bradley Hall-Watt esq. (d. 1908), Arthur Stanley Wilson esq. M.P., J.P. of Raywell Hall, Thomas Staveley Stephenson esq. of Walkington House, H. G. Chater-Fawsitt esq. of Walkington Hall, John Shaw esq. and the rector; there are also several small owners. The soil is clay on the east and marl or chalk on the west; excellent sheep farming land. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 3,718 acres; rateable value, £6,597; the population in 1911 was 1,288, including the 95 officials and their families and 591 inmates in the East Riding Lunatic Asylum.

The East Riding Lunatic Asylum, in this parish, & about 1 mile from Beverley, was erected in 1871, at a cost of about £43,000, & is an extensive pile of red brick, relieved by white brick & stone dressings, in the Italian style; it covers about 2 acres & includes a superintendent’s house & a chapel in the Gothic style; in 1884 a detached Hospital for Infectious Diseases was built at a cost of £2,000, & the building was enlarged in 1890 by the addition of a new wing to the female side, providing for 40 additional beds, at a cost of £1,300, and again in 1893 & 1896, at a total cost of £11,000, for 100 additional patients; a new wing on the male side, a general dining & recreation hall, sanitary blocks &c. were erected in 1902 at a cost of £28,000; the total number of beds is now 600, including 25 of each sex for private patients; attached is a farm of about 113 acres.

Public Elementary School (mixed & infants), erected in 1876, & enlarged in 1897, for 160 children; average attendance, 130.
