Historical Description

WALTON is a township and parish; the township is in the parishes of Walton and Wighill; 3 miles east-by-south from Wetherby, and three-quarters of a mile from Thorpe Arch station on the Harrogate railway, in the Northern division of the Riding, but for parliamentary purposes in the North Riding, Ainsty wapentane, Wetherby union, Tadcaster county court district, and Ainsty rural deanery, and the archdeaconry and diocese of York, situate near the river Wharfe, which flows to the south and west of the village. The Roman road called Watling street passes through the township, and crosses the river at St. Helen’s ford, where formerly stood a chapel dedicated to St. Helen. The church of st, Peter, situated on an eminence, is an Early Gothic edifice, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a square tower containing 3 bells, the largest of which is cracked; in the north wall of the chancel is a tablet in memory of Nicholas Fairfax esq. who died 26th February, 1703, under which is the recumbent figure of a knight in armour. The register dates from the year 1619. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £105, in the gift of George Lane Fox esq. and held by the Rev. William Henry Gooch B.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. The interest of £20, left by an unknown donor, is divided annually among the poor. George Lane Fox esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The soil is various; subsoil, limestone. The area is 1,447 acres; rateable value, £2,598: the population in 1871, 195.
