Historical Description

The village of Heath, in the parish of Warmfield, is universally allowed to be one of the most beautiful in England. It consists of various elegant stone houses, built round a green, with hanging woods and gardens towards the river.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WARMFIELD is a parish which includes the townships of Warmfield-cum-Heath and Sharlston, 3 miles east from Wakefield, from which it is separated by the Calder, 1 ½ miles from Normanton, and 2 miles from Shariston railway station, in the Southern division of the Riding, lower division of the wapentake of Agbrigg, Wakefield union and county court district, rural deanery of Pontefract, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter, situated at Kirkthorpe, is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave, north aisle, and tower containing 4 hells, dating from 1612; the chancel contains mural monuments to Thomas stringer, of Sharlston (1681), Sir John Dalston (1723), Sir George Dalston (1783), John Burton (1743), Dorothy Annitage (1683), Rev. John Leake (1740), Lady Smythe (1799), John Smith (1731), and has stained windows. The register dates from the year 1652, and is in very good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £240 with residence and 14 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Master and fellows of Clare College, Cambridge, as trustees of Barnabas Oley, and held by the Rev. Routh Tomlinson M.A. of that college. Here is an hospital endowed with £23 8s. yearly, for two men, left by John Frieston, of Altofts, who died in 1591, and originally intended for seven old men, but the bequest being a fixed money payment, named in the will, the funds are now insufficient for the maintenance of that number; here are also two almshouses for two aged women, founded by Othoneus Sagar, vicar of Warmfield, in 1558. The Hon. Mrs. Meynell Ingram, who is lady of the manor, and Colonel G. J. F. Smyth are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and loamy; subsoil, limestone and marl. The chief crops are wheat, beans and barley. The area of the township is 1,580 acres; rateable value, £6,630 13s.; population in 1871, of the township 927, of the entire parish 1,741; the area of the parish is 2,779 acres.
