Historical Description

WARMSWORTH is a parish, pleasant and healthy village, 2 ¾ miles south-west from Doncaster, 14 north-east from Sheffield and 8 from Rotherham, in the Southern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, south division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Doncaster rural deanery, York archdeaconry and diocese, and situated on the Sheffield and Rotherham road from Doncaster and bounded on the west by the Don. The Sprotborough station of the south Yorkshire railway is in this parish, about half-a-mile from the village. The church of St. Peter is a modern stone building, in the Early English style, standing on the site of an older building, in a picturesque churchyard, and consisting of chancel, nave and north aisle; the church was repaired and enlarged in 1850: the western portion of the churchyard is planted with large sycamore trees, the south side with larch and the east with fine old thorns. The register dates from the year 1664, and is in good condition. The rectory of Edlington, on the resignation of Rev. Robert Creyke in 1870, was united to that of Warmsworth. so that the two livings form now the ecclesiastical benefice of Warmsworth-cum-Edlington, value £500 yearly with 45 acres of glebe, in the gilt of R. H. Wrightson esq. and held by the Rev. George Jannings M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin and B.A. of Durham University, The rectory house is pleasantly situated and has a commanding view of the country. The charities are of £1 10s. yearly value. There is a meeting-house for the society of Friends, the first place of worship founded by George Fox.

The banks of the river Don afford beautiful walks, and the neighbourhood abounds with spots of interest, such as Edlington and Wadworth woods, Conisborough Castle, Sprotborough Hall, and Cusworth Park and Hall. Warmsworth is noted for its beautiful walnut trees, and was also the burial place of Francis Fawkes, the poet, a former rector of the parish. To the west of the village are extensive quarries of lime and limestone of a superior quality, the property of Richard Heber Wrightson esq. and William Aldam esq.; the quarries called Levitt Hagg Cliff are from seventy to one hundred feet deep. Warmsworth Hall, the residence of Lady Charlotte Fitzwilliam, is an ancient structure, with beautiful grounds. Richard Heber Wrightson esq. who is lord of the manor, and W. Aldam esq. J.P. are sole landowners. The soil is loam and lime and in some parts clay, but very fertile; the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are turnips, barley, wheat and oats. The area is 1,074 acres, 652 acres of which are arable, 325 grass and 55 woodland and quarries; rateable value, £3,860; population in 1871, 370.
