Historical Description

WARTER is a parish, township and small village, 3 miles north-east from Nunburnholme station on the York and Market Weighton branch of the North Eastern railway, 4 east from Pocklington and 17 north from York, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Wilton Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, Wilton Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. James, rebuilt in 1862 by Lord Muncaster, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, a memorial chapel, erected in 1908 to Lady Isabella (Innes-Ker), wife of the Hon. Guy Greville Wilson M.P., D.S.O. who died 12 Oct. 1905, and a western tower with spire containing 3 bells: there are several memorial windows to Gamel Augustus, 4th baron Muncaster, d. 13 June, 1862, placed by various members of his family: there are also windows and a monument to Charles Henry, 1st Baron Nunburnholme, d. 1907, and to his son, the Hon. Gerald V. Wilson, d. 1908: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £48, in the gift of Lord Nunburnholme, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Walter Ernest Booty M.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge, who is also vicar of Kilnwick Percy. The tithe, amounting to £500, is impropriated. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and in the village are several springs. Here was once an Augustinian priory, founded in 1132 by Geoffrey Fitz-Payne, and dedicated to St. James; at its dissolution there were ten canons and revenues estimated at £143; the site and buildings were subsequently granted to the Earl of Rutland, from whom it passed to the Stapletons, and from them by marriage to Sir William Pennington about 1660; his descendant. Lord Muncaster, sold the estate in 1878 to Charles Henry Wilson esq. M.P., D.L., J.P. afterwards 1st baron. The Dowager Lady Nunburnholme is lady of the manor and sole landowner, and resides at Warter Priory, a handsome mansion within a park of 300 acres, which has been very considerably enlarged and improved. The soil is chalk and clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips and seeds. The area is 7,872 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable Value, £4,916; the population in 1911 was 548.
