Historical Description
WATH is a parish, township and village, a quarter of a mile north-west from the Melmerby Junction station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 3 north from Ripon by rail and 4 by road, 8 south-west from Thirsk, 7 south-east from Masham and 25 north-west from York, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Ripon union and county court district, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hallikeld, rural deanery of Catterick East, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, with Perpendicular insertions, and consists of an unusually long chancel, with vestry, formerly of two storeys, nave, south chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock with two dials, erected in 1884, and 6 bells, the sixth having been hung in 1901 as a memorial to Her late Majesty Queen Victoria: the chancel retains triple sedilia and a double piscina, and some fragments of heraldic glass, including the coat of Monthermer, viz., or, an eagle displayed vert”; and that of Marmion: the stained east window was erected to the memory of the late Mr. and Mrs. Pearson, of Melmerby, by their three sons; and there are other memorial windows erected in 1884 and 1893 by former rectors: on the wall of the south chapel is a brass with effigies, to Richard Norton (paternally, Conyers), Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, ob. Dec. 20, 1420, and Katherine his wife, ob. 1418; but those to Richard Norton and his wife Isabella (Tempest), ob. respectively, sept. 30 and 20, 1433, and to Sir John Norton and Margaret (Ward) his wife, both ob. 1520, were apparently lost at the restoration in 1874, and of the latter only the matrix with a single shield now remains: here is a monument to Catherine (Musgrave) wife of Sir Richard Graham, 1st bart. of Esk, ob. 1653; another to Elizabeth (Hudson) wife of Sir Bellingham Graham, 5th bart. of Norton Conyers, d. 1766; a brass to Sir Reginald Graham, 4th bart. d. Nov. 4, 1755, and various other records of the Graham family: the church also contains a brass to the Rev. Stephen Penton, rector, d. 1706, and a memorial by Flaxman to the Rev. Thomas Brand, 15 years rector, d. 1814: on the south side is a tomb of the Decorated period, with gabled canopy, to John de Appleby, founder of the church: the church was restored in 1873—4 at a cost of £2,800, when various ancient remains were discovered, including a coffin slab, inscribed “Hie jacet Robertus frater rectoris,” and supposed to have covered the remains of Robert, brother of the founder: there is a fine parish oak chest of Flemish make: the church affords 250 sittings. The oldest register dates from the year 1574. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £625, including 69 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Misses New-Some, and held since 1907 by the Rev. Harry Charles sturdy M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The township of Wath is charged with tithe to the amount of £200.
Here is an almshouse for two poor persons, founded and endowed in 1690 by Peter Samwaies. The Misses Newsome, of Staincliffe, Dewsbury, are ladies of the manor of Wath township and the principal landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The acreage of the township is 767; rateable value, £2,356; the population in 1911 was 190 in the township and 653 in the parish.
