Historical Description

WAWNE, or Waghen, is a parish, township and small and scattered village, 3 miles north-west from Sutton station on the Hull and Hornsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 miles south-east from Beverley by the ferry and about 6 miles north from Hull, in the Holderness division of the Riding, Middle division of Holderness wapentake. North Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter is an embattled structure in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and a tower at the west end of the north aisle containing a clock and 3 bells: the roof is panelled and has carved bosses; the church was partly restored in 1874 and the chancel in 1902 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, when a new organ was also provided: there are 230 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1891 by the addition of about one-third of an acre, the gift of Major Ashe Windham. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £241, including an acre of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1907 by the Rev. George Alexander England M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The rectorial tithe, amounting to £882 (gross), is appropriated to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1860. On the removal of an old wall near Kenley farmhouse some years ago, a silver crucifix, a hawk’s bell, a dagger and some other curious relics were found. The poor receive the rent of eight acres of land in Cottingham, purchased in 1699, with £50 left by Sir Joseph Aske, and there is also a sum of £10 a year for educational purposes. The manor and church were granted to the monks of Meaux in 1294 by William le Gros, Earl of Albemarle. Major Ashe Windham J.P. who is lord of the manor, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who own the rectory manor, are the chief landowners. The soil is deep loam with a little carr land; subsoil, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. The parish consists of the townships of Waghen and Meaux. The area of Waghen township is 3,711 acres of land, 7 of water, 12 of tidal water and 3 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,938; the population in 1911 was 308 in the civil and 380 in the ecclesiastical parish.
