Historical Description

WEAVERTHORPE is a civil parish and village in a valley of the Wolds, with a stream running through the village street, and is 5 miles south from Weaverthorpe station on the York, Scarborough and Whitby section of the North Eastern railway, 10 north from Driffield, 13 east from Malton, 15 south-west from Scarborough and 15 west from Bridlington, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of. Buckrose, Driffield union and county court district, rural deanery of Buckrose, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Andrew, restored by Sir Tatton Sykes bart. in 1872, is an edifice of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chance), nave, south porch and a lofty western tower containing 3 bells; the ascent to the belfry is by a turret staircase, access to which is obtained inside the building: the font is of very early date, possibly Saxon: the chancel retains a piscina, aumbry and priests’ door: the chancel arch is Norman, and is crossed by a costly screen of brass, erected by Sir Tatton Sykes bart. who also gave the triptych above the altars; all the windows are stained, and there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1682. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £215, including 145 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles Edward Bedwell. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, and Alfred John Cholmley esq. of Rillington, are principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, chalk rock. The chief crops are barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,977 acres; rateable value, £2,935; the population in 1911 was 380.
