Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
WELL is a parish, township and village, 2 miles north from Tanfield station and 2 ½ east from Masham terminal station of that branch of the North Eastern railway, 4 ½ miles south from Bedale and 8 north from Ripon, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang East, Bedale union, Ripon county court district, rural deanery of Catterick East, archdeaconry of Richomod and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Michael is a substantial building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south chapels, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower containing 3 bells, and a valuable clock, presented by M. W. Vane Milbank esq. in October, 1871: the organ was provided in 1907 in memory of the Milbank family, and eight stained windows were presented in 1854 by Henry John Milbank esq.; four others by the late Earl of Stamford and Warrington, Mark Milbank esq. Mark Milbank, jun. esq. and by the artist, Mr. Warrington, of London; and two more were presented in 1860 by Mark Milbank esq. and Lady Augusta Milbank, in memory of Mary Emily Milbank, their youngest daughter, d. July 1, 1859: at the east end of the south chapel is an altar tomb, with recumbent effigy in stone, to Sir John Nevill, 4th and last baron Latimer, ob. 1577: in the south aisle there is an alto-relievo mural monument in white marble, by Westmacott, to Lady Margaret Milbank, the wife of Henry John Milbank esq. d. Mar. 7, 1852; there is also an altar tomb, with brass, to Lady Dorothy Nevill, dated 1526: the church was restored in 1854 the expense of Charles Chaplain and Mark Milbank esqs. and affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1530. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £250, with residence, including 44 acres of glebe, in the gift of William Denby Arton esq. of Tanfield Lodge, and held since 1905 by the Rev. T. Fitzgerald Redmayne M.A. of Oxford University. There is also a Wesleyan chapel. The hospital of St. Michael (now governed by eight trustees), for eight poor men and women, was restored in 1911, and has an attached chapel; the inmates receive 5s. each weekly. William Denby Arton esq. M.A., J.P. of Tanfield Lodge, is lord of the manor, master of the hospital and chief landowner. The soil is clayey and limey; the subsoil, clayey and limestone. The chief crops are barley, oats and turnips. The acreage of the township is 2,108; rateable value, £2,081; the population in 1911 was 273 in the township and 748 in the parish.
Public Elementary school (mixed), erected, with mistress’s residence, in 1867, for 80 children; average attendance, 33; the endowment arising from money invested with the Charity Commissioners & land.
