Historical Description

WELTON is a parish on the road from Hull to Market Weighton, 2 miles north-east from Brough station on the Hull and Selby section of the North Eastern railway and 10 south-west from Beverley: this parish comprises the old chapelry and township of Melton and the township of Welton, and is in the Howdenshire division of the Biding, wapentake of Howdenshire, South Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, union of Sculcoates, county court district of Hull, rural deanery of Howden, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Helen is an ancient cruciform building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and a central tower, containing a clock and 4 bells: a fine organ was provided in 1903 by the parishioners: ten of the windows are stained: the church was restored in 1863 by the late Sir G. G. Scott R.A. at the expense of the late Miss Broadley, and affords 460 sittings. The register dates from the year 1713. The living is a vicarage, with Melton annexed, net yearly value £400, in the gift of H. B. Harrison-Broadley esq. M.P., J.P. and held since 1903 by the Rev. James Raine B.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley esq. M.P., J.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner; there is also a manor in the parish belonging to the vicar. The principal crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The soil is wold; subsoil, chalk. The area of the township is 1,872 acres of land, 2 of water, 158 of tidal water and 298 of foreshore; rateable value, £5,406; the population in 1911 was 634, and 833 in the parish.

County Council School, Welton (mixed), opened in 1912, for 200 children; average attendance, 160.
