Historical Description

WELWICK is a township, parish and pleasant village, 1 ½ miles from the Humber, 2 ½ south-east from Patrington station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 12 south-east from Hedon and 17 south-east from Hull; it is in the Holderness division of the Riding, South division of the wapentake of Holderness, South Holderness petty sessional division, union of Patrington, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary is an ancient edifice of stone and brick, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing one bell, recast in 1902: the stained east window is a memorial to Dinah Fewson, d. 16th December, 1877, and was erected by her mother, Mrs. Ansley: the north aisle was new-roofed in 1886 at a cost of £100: in the south aisle is a low arched recess, richly canopied, within which is a species of altar tomb, adorned with tracery and Evangelistic symbols and bearing the effigy of a priest vested in alb and cope; the tomb, moved here from some other site, probably dates from the middle of the 14th century, and on the wall above are the arms of Edward the Confessor, the royal shield of the Plantagenets and that of the Percys: on the floor of the north aisle is a brass, with effigies and arms to William Wryght of Plowland esq. ob. 23 August, 1621, and Ann his wife, ob. 28 Dec. 1618: within a niche in the porch is a mutilated figure of the Virgin Mary; the eagle lectern of oak was presented in 1900, as a memorial to Mr. David S. Burnham, of Plowland, and Sarah, his wife: in 1904 the church was largely restored, including a new oak roof to the nave, at a cost of over £1,500; a 15th century screen, which had been partly destroyed, was also beautifully restored, at a cost of over £100: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1650. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £65, including 52 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Doveton Vincent Stoddart, of Turrell's Hall, Oxford, who is also rector of and resides at Holmpton. The impropriate tithe amounts to £25. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1849, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1911 at a cost of £500. Thomas Wright by will in 1838 left £100, the interest to be spent in coals to be divided amongst the poor of Welwick, at Christmas or Easter, and Thomas Bylish Baron in 1869 also bequeathed £100 for educational purposes. The Rev. Edward Mansfield Clements B.A. rector of Barkston. Grantham, who is lord of the manor of Welwick Provost; Mrs. Thompson, who is lady of Welwick Kelk manor; W. H. Fewson, T. Baron and H. Lamplugh esqrs. the mortgagees of the late Robert Lambert and the Crown are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, strong clay marl. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats and barley. The area is 3,625 acres of land, 2 of water, 569 of tidal water and 918 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,561; the population in 1911 was 322.

Plowland, now a farm house, occupied by Massrs George and Edward Burnham, was formerly a fortified residence, belonging to the Wryght family, of which were John and Christopher Wryght, two of the conspirators in the famous “Gunpowder Plot.” Some of the masonry of the old building still remains.

Council School (mixed), opened in 1905, for 70 children; average attendance, 60.
