Historical Description
WENSLEY is a parish, township and village, with a station one mile north from the village on the Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, 1 ½ miles southwest from Leyburn, 11 ½ west from Bedale and 15 ½ east from Hawes, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang West, Leyburn union and county court district, rural deanery of Catterick West, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. This was once a considerable market town, but in consequence of a great plague which broke out here about 1565, the greater part of its inhabitants were compelled to leave the place, and it is now only a small village, on the north bank of the river Ure, or Yore, which is crossed near the village by a bridge of 4 arches, originally built in the 14th century, and widened and repaired in 1818. The ancient parish of Wensley embraces the townships of Wensley, Preston-under-Scar, Redmire, Castle Bolton, and the town and township of Leyburn. The church of the Holy Trinity, made collegiate in 1399, is a fine and interesting structure in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of a long choir, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells and a clock, presented in 1899 as a memorial to the Rev. the Hon. Thomas Orde-Powlett M.A. rector here 1850—94: the chancel retains very fine carved oak stalls, erected by Henry Richardson, rector in 1527; the poppy heads include spirited figures of animals, and the carving is much enriched with heraldic shields: in the chancel is a fine brass to Sir Simon de Wenslaw, rector, c. 1390, with effigy, the hands crossed on the breast, and over these a chalice; the marginal inscription is lost, but let into the same slab is an inscription to Oswald Dykes, 20 years rector here, ob. 1607: in the north aisle are preserved some fragments of Early Saxon work recovered from the churchyard, one of which bears a cross and the words “Donfrid”: at the east end of the north aisle is a portion of a richly-carved parclose, formerly in the Scrope chantry in the Abbey of St. Agatha-juxta-Richmond, but now inclosing the manorial pew: in the same aisle is a monument to Henry and Richard, younger children of Henry, Lord Scrope of Bolton, and Mabilla his wife, who died respectively 25th March and 28th July, 1525: there are other memorials to the Hon. Thomas Powlett Orde-Powlett, d. 31st January, 1843; and a brass to Algitha Alkeda Brenda, d. 3rd November, 1871, and to Rhoda Lelia Alice, d. 17th July, 1890, daughters of the Hon. W. T. and Lady Algitha F. M. Orde-Powlett, and memorials to Peter Goldsmith M.D. d. 1836; Edward Tennant, d. 1860, and the Rev. Ottiwell Tennant, d. 1863, and to John and Richard Clederow, former rectors: in the chancel is buried the son, aged 19 years, ob. May 12, 1694, of the Rev. William Mason, the poet, who was rector here from 1673 to 1683: Thomas Maude, author of a poem on Wensleydale, who died in 1798, is interred in the churchyard: the organ was erected by Lord Bolton as a memorial to his wife, Letitia Baroness Bolton, who died 4th January, 1882. The font, dated 1662, bears a curious inscription, and has been restored; inside the entrance is a quaint alms, or relic box: the church affords 334 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory with Leyburn annexed, joint net yearly value £620, including 77 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Bolton, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Ernest Orde-Powlett in A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The township of Wensley is charged with tithe to the amount of 322. There is a library and reading room, which contains about 4.00 volumes. In the parish are disused lead mines belonging to Lord Bolton. Bolton Hall, a fine mansion of stone, pleasantly situated one mile west from the church, amidst extensive and well-wooded grounds, commanding a magnificent view of the valley of the Tore, was erected shortly before 1658 by Charles, 6th Marquess of Winchester and first Duke of Bolton, and is the seat of Lord Bolton D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and the largest landowner in Wensleydale; it was partly destroyed by fire in Oct. 1901, but has since been rebuilt, and contains some fine old portraits of the Scrope family. Wensley Hall is the residence of the Hon William George Algar Orde-Powlett M.P., D.L., J.P. In the park adjoining the village of Wensley is an old burial ground, where some skeletons and a number of flint implements have been found by Lord Bolton, and can be seen in the museum at Bolton Castle. The subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are hay. The area of the township is 2,059 acres of land and 29 of water; rateable value, £2,465; the population in 1911 was 246 in the township and 1,325 in the ecclesiastical parish.
