Preston-under-Scar History

PRESTON-UNDER-SCAR is a township and village, 1 6/4 miles north-west, on an acclivity, and beneath a scar to the west of the natural terrace called Leyburnm-Shawl. There is a mission room, used since 1862 for church services, which are held in the evenings only by the clergy of Wensley, and there is also a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. Lead and coal were obtained. Lord Bolton is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The subsoil is limestone. The land is principally in pasturage. The area is 2,572 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £1,890; the population in 1911 was 247.
