The church of the Holy Trinity, erected by Earl Fitzwilliam to the memory of his parents, and consecrated in 1877, is a building in the Early Gothic style, with a spire 200 feet high, and is splendidly fitted, the total cost having been £25,000: the chancel of the old church containing several monuments of the Wentworth family, and in particular one to the unfortunate Thomas Wentworth. Earl of Strafford, has been converted into a mortuary chapel, and the tower, in which are six bells, also remains. The register dates from the year 1660, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £125, in the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam and held by the Rev. Henry Alexander Macnaghten M.A. of Kings College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans have a small chapel here. The Barrow Hospital, founded in 1696 (to which is attached the Barrow school) maintains twelve poor and aged persons. The Mechanics’ Institution, erected by the late Earl Fitzwilliam, contains a good library. Wentworth Woodhouse, the seat of Earl Fiizwilliam K.G. is a superb classic mansion, situated in a well-wooded deer park of 1,500 acres, one mile east of Wentworth village: the south front consists of a centre and two wings, extending nearly 600 feet in length with a fine portico supported by columns of the Ionic order, but a greater attraction than Wentworth Hall is the Mausoleum, a building situated on an eminence in the park, and erected by the second Earl Fitzwilliam, in honour of his uncle, the Marquis of Rockingham; there is also in the grounds a monument to Admiral Keppel. Earl Fitzwilliam is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, stone and coal. The chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes.
