Acklam In Cleveland Banns (1754-1903)

Historical Description

ACKLAM, or West or Old Asklam, is a civil parish and village, on the High road from Stokesley to Guisborough, 7 miles north-east from Yarm and 3 south from Middlesbrough, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, West division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of North Langbaurgh, union and county court district of Middlesbrough, rural deanery of Middlesbrough, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary, built on the site of an ancient church of the same name, is a small and plain building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: there are 170 sittings. The register dates from the year 1732. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 2 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of William Hustler Hustler esq. and held since 1912 by the Rev. Arthur Sumner Wetherall M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. The great or rectorial tithe, amounting to £206, is appropriated to the Archbishop of York. Acklam Hall is the property and residence of William Hustler Hustler esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner; the mansion is a red brick structure in the Elizabethan style, and stands in an extensive park in which is a beautiful avenue of fir and lime trees. The soil is sand and clay; subsoil, clay. The crops are turnips and potatoes, but the land is mostly in pasture. Population in 1911, 140; the area is 1,159 acres; rateable value, 2,027.
