Historical Description

HESLERTON is a parish in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Buckrose, union and county court district of Malton, rural deanery of Settrington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York, consisting of the townships of East and West Heslerton and part of Yedingham township. West Heslerton is a village on the road from Malton to Sherburn, about 1 ½ miles south from the station of that name on the Malton and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, 8 ½ miles north-east from Malton by road and 8 ¼ by railway. It was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1882. The church of All Saints, formerly dedicated to St. Andrew, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, and a western turret containing two bells: in the church is a cenotaph of marble, with a long inscription to Sir Christopher Sykes bart. d. 17 Sept. 1801; and there are three marble tablets to members of the Foulis family, who formerly resided here: in the chancel is an ancient monument of stone, much mutilated, but supposed to commemorate the founder of the church; the font, of Caen stone, was presented by the 7th Viscount Downe, about 1855: in 1888 a vestry was built adjoining the north aisle: the church was restored in 1886 at a cost of £1,002, and affords sittings for 130 persons. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £220, including 262 acres of glebe, with residence, mi the gift of the Crown, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Tegid Aneurin Williams, of St. Augustine’s College, Canterbury, who is also incumbent of Knapton. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. Heslerton Hall is the property and residence of the Hon. Eustace Henry Dawnay D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is sandy loam-a large portion of the parish lies on chalk wolds; the subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of West Heslerton township is 2,995 acres; rateable value, £3,796; the population in 1911 was 274.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1829 by the Hon. Marmaduke Langley (when lord of the manor), M. Cannon esq. & the rector, since enlarged, for 95 children; average attendance, 87.
