Historical Description
WEST ROUNTON is a parish, township and village, pleasantly situated on rising ground, 1 ½ miles north-east from the Welbury station on the Leeds and Stockton branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 north-west from Northallerton, 9 south-west from Stokesley and 38 from York, in the Richmond division of the Riding, Allertonshire wapentake and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Northallerton, rural deanery of Northallerton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Oswald is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a turret containing 2 bells: the font, date 1140, is Norman: there are 100 sittings: new ground was added to the present churchyard and consecrated 1893. The register dates from the year 1750. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of East Rounton annexed, joint net yearly value £250, including 90 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1902 by the Rev. William Thomas Robson M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. There is also a Wesleyan Methodist chapel here. Sir Hugh Bell bart. lord lieutenant, of Rounton Grange, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. The acreage is 1,458; rateable value, £4,079; the population in 1911 was 188.
