Historical Description

At Tanfield, two miles south from Masham, near the church, is an ancient castle, which in early times belonged to the family of Fitzhugh. In the eighth of King Edward II. John, Lord Marmion, had licence from the king to make a castle of his house, called the Hermitage, situated in Tanfield Wood, which castle seems to be a distinct building from that near the church. Respecting the building or demolition of the castle, little or nothing can be collected, either from historical records or tradition. The latter indeed says, that when Fairfield Castle was destroyed, the materials were purchased by several of the surrounding gentry, and the Earl of Exeter’s house at Shape, and the seat of the Wandisfords, at Kirklington, were built with them. The part now standing appears to have been a gate-house.

Leland gives the following description in his Itinerary: "Great Tanfeld, where is a castle on a banke longith to Lord Parrs, and stondith on Ure. Tanfelde Castel longid to the Lord Marmion, and so came to the Fitzhughs.

"The tounlet of West Tanfeld, standith on a diving ground hard by Ure, a river of colowr for the next part of Soden water, by reason of the colowr and the morish nature of the soile of Weneedale, from whens it cometh. In the church of West Tanfeld be divers tombes in a chappelle on the north side of the church, of the Marmions, whereof one is in an arch of the waulle, and that seemeth most auntient. Then lyith ther alane a ladye with the apparel of a vowes, and anothe layde with a crownet on her hedde. Then is ther an high tomb of alabaster in the middle of the chapel, wher, as I hard say, lyith one Lorde John Marmion. And in the south side of the chapel is another tombe of the Marmions buried alone. Ther is a master and two cantuaria priests at West Tanfelde of the foundation of one of the Marmions, and there is another centaurie besides these. The castelle of Tanfelde, or rather, as it is now a mean manor place, standith hard on the ripe of Ure, wher I saw no notable building, but a faire tourid gatehouse, and a hall of squared stone."

This gate still remains at the west end of the church-yard. But Leland says, "or ever he cam to West Tanfelde he passed by fery for lak of bridge. "There is now a stone bridge over the river just at the entrance into the town.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WEST TANFIELD is a parish, township and village on the north bank of the river Ure, which is here crossed by a stone bridge of three arches and forms the boundary of the Riding, and having a station on the Ripon and Masham branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 6 miles south from Bedale, 4 east-south-east from Masham and 6 west-north-west from Ripan, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Hallikeld wapentake and petty sessional division, Bedale union and Ripon county court district, rural deanery of Catterick East, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient building of stone, rebuilt by Maude Marmion in 1343, in the Norman, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells, presented by the late rector and his brother: the organ was provided in 1913 at a cost of about £400 by the present rector, in memory of his wife: there are six stained windows, two of which are memorials to members of the Staveley family, two others to the Dalton family; the fifth in the north aisle contains glass collected from various windows at the restoration of the church, about 1860, and comprises shields of arms of Marmion and St. Quintin; the sixth window was erected in 1911 by William Denby Arton esq. in memory of his father and mother: the most interesting architectural feature of the church is a small chamber on the north side of the chancel, supposed to have been a confessional, and probably unique; the interior is about 5 feet long by 4 wide, and there are two openings on the south side and one on the east: this church was the burial place of the Marmions, barons Marmion of Witrington, co. Lincoln, and contains a highly interesting altar-tomb with effigies, usually assigned to Sir Robert (de Grey) Marmion, temp. Edward III. and Lora (St. Quintin) his wife; around and over this tomb still remains the original iron herse with prickets for lights rising above it: there is also in the south aisle the cross-legged effigy of a knight, temp. Henry III. another of a lady, temp. Bichard II. wearing a long mantle; and two other effigies of a knight and lady, also temp. Henry III: in the nave is a plain coffin slab of early date: there are 260 sittings. The greater part of the registers are missing; the earliest date of the existing register is 1714.

The living is a rectory, net yearly value £370, including 72 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of William Denby Arton esq. M.A., J.P. and held since 1906 by the Rev. George Percy Howard Frost M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built at a cost of £2,400, and seating 200 persons. Near the south side of the church and close to the river stands the gate house of Tanfield Castle, founded by John, Lord Marmion, who obtained license, 4 Edward II. (1310—11) to crenellate his house here; it is a rectangular battlemented structure of Perpendicular date, with a Pointed entrance, and above it an elegant oriel window; the male line of this branch of the Marmions ceased on the death of Robert, third baron, about 1340, and the barony fell into abeyance between his two sisters. The Tanfield Angling Club preserve the fishing in the River Ure and have a private hatchery here, where over 4,000 trout are turned out annually. William Denby Arton esq. M.A., J.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is party clay, gravel and limestone; the subsoil, gravel and limestone. The chief crops are barley, oats, turnips and seeds. The area is 3,244 acres of land and 41 of water; rateable value, £3,904; the population in 1911 was 526.

Public Elementary school (mixed), enlarged in 1895, for 200 children; average attendance, 96.
