Historical Description

WESTON is a parish, township and village, 2 miles northwest from Otley and 12 north from Bradford, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Otley county court district, upper division of Claro wapentake, Wharfedale union, rural deanery of Otley, Craven archdeaconry, Ripon diocese, situated on the north bank of the river Wharfe. The church of All saints is an old stone building in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles with a tower and 2 bells: in the Dawson family pew the following inscription is engraved on a plate and fixed in the wall: “in a stone coffin underneath are deposited the remains of Sir William Stopham, knt. lord of Weston, living A.D. 1312:” he had two children, a son and a daughter; the former died without issue, the latter was married to John, the younger brother of Sir Mauger Le Vavasour, of Hazlewood knt. from whom he inherited certain lands in Askwith. and, upon the death of Sir William Stopham, he succeeded through his wife to the lordship of Weston, which has descended ever since in the direct line to the present owner, Mrs. Dawson: four stained windows have been placed in the church by Mrs. Dawson in memory of her husband; there are also tablets to John Blenchow (1630); William Vavasour (1645); Martha Elizabeth Clarissima Thomson, of Doncaster (1651); and a brass to the memory of William Vavasour (1587); besides small tablets to members of same family, bearing dates 1729, 1787, 1798: this family are directly descended from Malgar le Vavasour, who, is said to have come over with the Conqueror: there is a plain stone font. The register dates from the year 1673. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150, in the gift of Mrs. Dawson and held by the Rev. Thomas Welby Northmore. Weston Hall, the seat of Mrs. Dawson, was in part erected in the reign of Henry VIII.; the Southern portion is of a much later date; the estate is well wooded, Mrs. Dawson and William Millthorpe Spence esq. own the manor and are the principal landowners. The soil is day; the subsoil is sandstone. The land is chiefly used for grazing. The population of the township in 1871 was 170 and the area is 1,509 acres; rateable value, £2,048; the area of the parish is 4,902 acres; the population 456.
