Historical Description

WESTOW is a parish, township and well-built village, pleasantly seated on an eminence to the east side of the river Derwent, about 1 ½ miles east from. Kirkham Abbey station on the York and Scarborough section of the North Dastern railway and 6 south from Malton, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, Buckrose wapentake and petty sessional division, Malton union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary, which stands about half a mile from the village, is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a fine embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the east and west windows are stained and there is another, presented in 1876 by C. G. S. Foljambe esq. (afterwards Baron Hawkesbury and 1st Earl of Liverpool) as a memorial to Louisa Blanche (Howard), his first wife, d. 7 Oct. 1871: in 1864 the church was thoroughly restored and the north aisle added, at a cost of £1,400: the exterior walls exhibit many fragments of carved work, and in the churchyard are several stone coffins: there are sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1549. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £223, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Griffiths Thomas William Purchas M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. The rectorial tithe, amounting to £575, is assigned to the Archbishop of York. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The trustees of the late Francis Best Norcliffe esq. who are lords of the manor, Edward Arthur Field Whittell Herbert esq. of Upper Helmsley Hall, York, and Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, are the principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are turnips, oats, wheat and barley. The area of the township is 1,189 acres; rateable value, £1,967; the population in 1911 was 294, and in the parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1873, for 120 children; average attendance, 84.
