Historical Description

Wetherby is a small well-built market-town, twelve miles from Boroughbridge, pleasantly situated upon the river Wharfe, over which it has a noble bridge; above which the river forms a beautiful cascade, by falling in a grand sheet of water over a high dam, erected for the conveniency of the mills, where they not only grind corn but press great quantities of oil from rapeseed, and rasp logwood for the use of the clothiers and dyers.

Here is a weekly market on Thursday. Within a mile of the town is Wetherby-grange, the seat of Richard Thompson, Esq. In this park is a heronry, a thing not very common in this part of the country. A little below Wetherby is St. Helen’s Ford, where the Roman military road crossed the river Wharfe.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WETHERBY is a market town and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1869 from the parish of Spofforth. the head of a union, and a polling; place for the Eastern division of the Riding, pleasantly situated on the north bank of a bend of the river Wharfe, 7 miles south-east from Knaresborough, 7 north-west from Tadcaster, 12 north-north-east from Leeds, 13 ½ west-by-south from York, and 189 ½ by rail from London; in the Upper division of Claro wapentake, Tadcaster county court district, archdeaconry of Craven, Wetherby rural deanery, Ripon diocese. The Church Fenton and Harrogate branch of the North Eastern railway has a station at the north end of the town, and there is also a line to Leeds. Over the river Wharfe is a handsome stone bridge of six arches, and near it a weir or dam, by means of which a large corn mill is worked. By our Saxon ancestors this town was called Wederbi, a word signifying “to turn,” owing to its situation on a bend of the river Wharfe. Until the year 1824, when the property was disposed of in small freehold lots, the whole town belonged to the Duke of Devonshire; a great number of the old buildings have been taken down and modern houses erected in their place; the houses are now principally built of stone, which gives the town a clean and handsome appearance. There are some very good shops, and the town is well lighted with gas. The church of St. James, consisting of chancel and nave, with a gallery at the west end, is a handsome stone structure, with a square tower, containing a clock and 6 musical bells; it was built in 1840—1, through the exertion of the Rev. W. Raby, then incumbent, at a cost of about £4,300, and consecrated on the 1st of February, 1842: the chancel was enlarged and an organ chamber added in 1877, at a cost of about £1,400, inclusive of the organ, built by Abbott of Leeds; a beautiful east window was erected at the same time, and the restoration committee are now (1880) collecting funds for re-seating the church. The register dates from the year 1783. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value about £370, in the gift of Lord Leconfield and held by the Rev. Charles Handcock. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have chapels here. The cemetery, consisting of about three acres, with two mortuary chapels, was laid out in 1874, and is situated in Hallfield lane. There are a National and Wesleyan day schools, both of which are supported by voluntary contributions and weekly payments, and are under Government inspection. The Town Hall, a handsome stone building, situated in the centre of the Market place, dates from 1845, the foundation stone having been laid on the 11th of June in that year; it comprises magisterial and assembly-rooms, reading-room and two ante-rooms upstairs, with rooms for the National school and an engine house on the ground-floor; surmounting the building is an open belfry with 1 bell and a clock; the total cost of the building was £1,300. The Wetherby Institute comprises rooms for reading and amusement, the ground floor being occupied under the game committee as a Cocoa House. A market for corn, butter, eggs and other provisions, is held every Thursday; the rich agricultural district surrounding the town rendering this market of great importance. A fair for cattle is held every alternate Thursday, and is well attended; statute fairs, for the hiring of servants, are held on alternate market days in the month of November. An Agricultural society was established here in 1840, of which the Earl of Harewood is president, and exhibitions take place annually in September. The Wharfedale brewery is in the occupation of James Coates esq. There is a large corn mill. Agricultural implements are also made here. Wetherby was anciently in the possession of the Knights Templars, but on the abolition of that order in the reign of Edward II. it was given by the Pope to the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, and this grant was confirmed by the Parliament in 1324. During the civil war this town had a small Parliamentary garrison, consisting of 300 foot and 40 horse, commanded by Sir Thomas Fairfax, The foundations and basement chambers of an ancient castle, supposed to date from the time of Henry I. have been met with on a high and commanding site on the bank of the Wharfe, at the centre of the curve near the bridge. A short distance below the town is st, Helen’s ford, where the Roman military road crossed the river. The neighbourhood of Wetherby offers an admirable field for scientific research, in botany, geology, and entomology, and has yielded many fine and rare specimens. The scenery around is beautiful and picturesque. Wetherby Grange, half a mile south of the town, the property of Colonel Gunter J.P. commandant of the 5th West York Militia, is a handsome mansion, situated in a noble park, with ornamental woodlands interspersed; the estate is chiefly occupied by the owner, who has a splendid herd of shorthorns. Andrew Montagu esq. (lord of the manor), Colonel Gunter, the trustees of E. J. Rhodes esq. and J. P. Law esq. are chief landed proprietors. The soil is gravelly; subsoil limestone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and old grass land. The ecclesiastical parish contains 1,468 acres; the area of the township is 1,601 acres; rateable value, £9,739; population in 1871, 1,657.

Petty sessions are held in the Town hall, fortnightly on Thursday. The following townships are in the division:-Bardsey-cum-Rigton, Bickerton, Bilton, Bramham-cum-Oglethorpe, Clifford-cum-Boston, Collingham, Cowthorpe, Dun Keswick, East Keswick, Harewood, Kearby-cum-Netherby, Kirk Deighton, Linton, Micklethwaite, North Deighton, Ribstone Little, Sicklinghall, Spofforth-cum-Stockeld, Thorp Arch, Tockwith.
