Historical Description

WETWANG is a parish and township on the road from Beverley to Malton with a station, a quarter of a mile north, on the Malton and Driffield branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 6 ½ miles west from Driffield and 13 ½ south-east from Malton, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake of Buckrose, Bainton Beacon petty sessional division, Driffield union and county court district, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York, The church of St. Nicholas is an edifice of stone, in the Norman, Early English and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, with transept, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells, one of which is inscribed “Sancte Nicola, ora pro nobis,” the other “Venite Exultemus Domino, Matthew Shirt, vicar,1667:” the tenor bell and clock were presented by J. W. Fearnsides esq. M.A. of the Temple, London, in memory of his sister, Harriet Ann Fearnsides, who died Jan. 8, 1895: the chancel is fitted with oak stalls, enriched with carved poppy heads: the nave and north aisle are separated by an arcade of four arches, the piers of which are Norman: the font, also of Norman date, is adorned with interlacing arches: there is a piscina in the north aisle, and another in the nave: all of the windows are stained, and include memorials to Lady Sykes and Miss Hilda Cole: the tower was restored in 1895, and in 1901 the chancel was rebuilt and refitted, a new pulpit provided, a screen erected in the transept, and the church new roofed with carved oak, under the direction of C. Hodgson Fowler esq. architect, of Durham: in 1902 an organ and a brass eagle lectern were provided at the expense of Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: there are 300 sittings: in the churchyard, opposite to the tower, stands the base of an ancient cross, and remains of some 15 others have been discovered by the vicar on various parts of the wolds: at the entrance to the churchyard is a lych gate of oak. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £350, including 11 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1911 by the Rev. John Clayton M A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1886, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1869. At the west end of the village is a flour mill, the property of Mr. Robert Leppington. There are two manor houses, one being that of the Prebendal manor. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, is lord of the manors and principal landowner. The soil is light; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 3,43.6 acres; rateable value, £3,779; the population in 1911 was 540 in the township and 709 in the parish.
