Historical Description

WHARRAM PERCY is a parish and township, consisting of two farms, about 1 ½ miles south from Wharfam station on the Malton and Driffield branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 south-east from Malton, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Buckrose, Malton union and county court district, rural deanery of Buckrose, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary is an edifice in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of Norman date, with pinnacles and containing 2 bells: there are sittings for 100 persons. The register dates from the year 1534. The living is a vicarage, with Wharram-le-Street annexed, joint net yearly value £226, including 48 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Middleton, and held since 1877 by the Rev. William Gwillim Chilman, of St. Bees, who resides at Wharram-le-Street.

Lord Middleton is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is chalk. The chief craps are barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 1,459 acres; rateable value, £1,272; the population in 1911 was 52.
