For a considerable distance the river Derwent forms the eastern boundary of the parish, but at the south-eastern extremity the parish stretches across the river and includes a valuable tract of rich meadow land called Wheldrake Ings. The church of St. Helen, rebuilt in 1779, is an edifice of brick and stone, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave of brick and an embattled western tower of stone, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells: the interior was restored and redecorated in 1874 and an organ introduced in 1871, at a cost of £625: the tower was renovated in 1900: there are 200 sittings: the churchyard was enlarged in 1824, and again in 1877 and 1908, the additional portions being presented by the lord of the manor. The register dates from the year 1603. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £338, including 135 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1912 by the Rev. William Webster Stromberg M.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel in the village. The trustees of the 3rd Lord Wenlock (d. 1912) are lords of the manor and chief landowners; there are also several small freeholders. The soil is a strong clay and loam, except on the moor, where it is sandy. The chief crops are potatoes, wheat, beans, barley, oats and green crops generally. The townships of Wheldrake and Langwith constitute this parish; the former contains 4,510 acres of land, 1 of water and 9 of tidal water; rateable value, £5,224; the population in 1911 was 530 in the township and 582 in the parish.
